New General Rule: When a celebrity promotes an already existing picture book, it is rarely a good thing. I am thinking, naturally, of the episode of Friends where they read Love You Forever in its entirety. But it doesn’t just happen on television shows. Recently a Kardashian recommended today’s title, and to my horror and delight it’s 20 years old (if you go by its original self-published publication date). A self-proclaimed books for parents (rather than children) we have to weigh Tillman’s talents as an illustrator against her storytelling choices. The end result is that we have two rather different final scores. Listen and see why that is!

Listen to the whole show here on Soundcloud or download it through iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify, Google Play, PlayerFM, Audible, Amazon Music, or your preferred method of podcast selection.

Show Notes:

Yep. The Goodnight Moon Suite in the Sheraton Boston does indeed exist. Bowl of mush and all.

And I found the Goodnight Moon article that I allude to in the show. From The Ugly Volvo, All of My Issues with the “Goodnight Moon” Bedroom. Written in very much the same vein as the McSweeney’s article Thirty-Nine Questions for Charlie Daniels Upon Hearing “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” for the First Time in Twenty-Five Years.

This is the free floating note that this now officially Kate’s nemesis.

A Bible quote at the front tells people, “This is the club I belong to.” But, to be fair, this is probably the coolest Bible quote you could kick off with.

The choice to break up the centers of these sentences with a frog is a very odd design choice. We don’t see folks do this very often (and for good reason). By the way, this is NOT a note. That is a treble clef.

Does this baby face in the sky have any Teletubbies influence involved in its inspiration? You be the judge.

Ah. The duckface moon (which would be a GREAT name for a book or poem). Which apparently the Kardashians are into.

We can NOT figure out how this freaky deaky scarecrow got into this book. It has the creepiest smile on its face which, naturally, means that this is actually the best part of the book as far as I’m concerned.

I dunno. Something a bit unnerving about these animals and their dead-eyed staring.

Why is the Tower of London here? “Oh sure, put the Tower of London in there. Nothing bad has ever happened there.”

It’s kinda psychedelic while somehow also remaining not quite psychedelic enough.

Stephanie V.W. Lucianovic wrote us saying, “It’s called Fishwife: www.eatfishwife.com, and I feel like you might desperately need these sardine hair clips: https://eatfishwife.com/products/chunks-sardine-dream-clips

Kate Recommends: Sweet Pickle Books in Manhattan, NYC

Betsy Recommends: Blunderbuss: The Tomi Ungerer Symposium (more info to come on how it went!).

Write a two-page apology in the POV of an unreliable narrator. Include detail and tell the story of what happened in such a way that the apologist looks really guilty and also not sorry.

I'm still very upset with myself and deadlines. I miffed another one by a day. (Ditto with a con a friend wanted me to go to AND scheduling the exams this week). I swear my brain see it but writes it as something else. I've barely submitted this year. It's disappointing but a lot of the open calls haven't matched anything I have in my stable.

So what shall we talk about today? Something I've mentioned before but let's touch on this again because of Hazbin Hotel last week. The OverPowered character and what to do with them. spoilers for S2 if that matters to you )

So what do you do? Superman has this issue so they came up with kryptonite but then it gets ridiculous. That crap turned up everywhere. Ditto green lantern who is threatened by the color yellow. Captain Marvel faces the same issue. She's so powerful she could have smited Thanos so they sent her to the other side of the universe.

How then do we deal with over powered characters without things getting silly or making them look stupid? It's not that easy. Hazbin went with both pulling Lucifer's fangs AND making him look stupid which annoyed me. There needs to be a way to do this that doesn't make your character look/act dumb.

One way is to not get into the situation in the first place but what if you can't avoid it, say in the case of Lucifer an established entity in everyone's mind.

Another way actually is what they did with Marvel, get them out of the picture for some (hopefully good) reason. In this case above with Lucifer, there was no reason they couldn't send him to another ring of hell and he didn't know what was happening because he was busy elsewhere (though I suspect they are planning to use this to force his daughter into actions she doesn't want to take)

Any thoughts on this? Have you handled it? Ideas for handling it?

Any thoughts on the student who just emailed me at 10 pm asking for when unit 3 test is as if I haven't been posting it for weeks? It's tomorrow btw.

Basically spent most of the day in bed asleep. I got up at 12:00 for breakfast and coffee, put in a Shipt order, which luckily came unusually fast, and then went back to bed after I put it away.

Slept for several more hours, then eventually got up and puttered online until 7:00 when I Teamed the FWiB.

At 8:30 I had him hold on while I called Middle Brother. He is fine, went out to Target yesterday, and did something, I'm not sure what, today, and had fun. He is looking forward to Thanksgiving.

Got back on with the FWiB for a few more minutes, then ended.

Had dinner, and went to the bedroom where I puttered on my phone, then called [personal profile] mashfanficchick. Ze had a good time this weekend with zer father.

Then I came out for pet feeding time, and here I am.

2. Bed rest.

4. Middle Brother is well.

5. Thanksgiving coming.

... with a bonus of what i've been listening to, if you like a mix of gothy EBM and synthpop!

ladytron, I believe in you / ministry, every day is halloween / boy harsher, pain
(these three tracks were instrumental in getting me out of the months-long funk so i have a lot of fondness for 'em <3)

* OtakuArchive - lots of old 1990's-2010's anime magazines, convention pamphlets, zines, and paraphernalia hosted on archive dot org. sensory heaven for graphic designers!

you can't unbake a cake - might be technically above some people's heads, but i liked how it explained how data (eg, artist's drawings) are actually used and funneled through AI, and how it avoided being shrill or hype-y, while still admitting it's a huge issue to deal with legally/socially/tech wise.

* I found MuckRock through that censorship webinar series; they make it easy to do file information requests from the US government. If i'm at a loss for where to donate for a month, I'll probably put them on my rotation.

* https://prison.josh.mn/site sincere reflection & thoughts from a former pirate site host. i enjoyed his reading list.

* byte archive - every cover and magazine page of the old BYTE "hacker" magazine from the 1990's. more graphic design goodness and history!

* "why movies just don't feel real anymore" - smart, nuanced video essay on why it's not just the texture / type of camera / blocking / CGI that makes live action feel differently versus pre-1990's shows. (fair warning if you watch it at x2 speed like i do it might make you feel dizzy.)

and finally, some words that gave me chills in a good way:

Do not be afraid to confront the world’s wounds. Violence, poverty, exile, loneliness, addiction and forgotten wars are issues that need to be acknowledged and narrated. Good cinema does not exploit pain; it recognizes and explores it. This is what all the great directors have done. Giving voice to the complex, contradictory and sometimes dark feelings that dwell in the human heart is an act of love. Art must not shy away from the mystery of frailty; it must engage with it and know how to remain before it. Without being didactic, authentically artistic forms of cinema possess the capacity to educate the audience’s gaze.

Hi, all, and happy Sunday!

It’s true! Even after a week that contained colossal legislative disappointments, new ICE attacks in Charlotte, and more deeply disturbing Epstein stories, we still have a chock-full list of wins to celebrate. Let’s make sure we take time to savor each one, because if we only focus on the dark stuff we’re going to lose our minds!

Thank you for all of the hard work you’re doing to ensure that week after week, these Sunday posts continue to be replete with positive news. I know that as long as you’re in the mix the victories will keep coming.

So let’s get to the good things that happened this week! Enjoy!

Celebrate This! 🎉

During the G-Star 2025, Netmarble released two new videos and details for its upcoming free-to-play monster-taming action RPG Mongil: Star Dive. The first video is a trailer showcasing the village of Naksan and its characters. The second video is a developer commentary that sees Netmarble Production Director Lee Dong-jo and Business Division leader Kang Dong-gi discussing various aspects of the game.

The new details about the game include the region of Sura and new characters. Sura is a Korean-inspired region, where humans, demi-human races, and monsters coexist. There players will meet characters such as Sangun, Jiwon, and Gabi. They will also encounter Korean folklore-inspired Dokkaebi bosses, which include Duoxini and Hahnul.

Mongil: Star Dive follows main characters Cloud, Verna, and Nyanners, who embark on an adventure through various landscapes and encounter numerous monsters. The game’s combat sees players control a three-character party in fast-paced battles. Meanwhile, its monster collection system lets players collect, tame, and synthesise a variety of creatures. The game is development for PC and mobile platforms, with pre-registrations currently available on the game’s official website, the Epic Games Store, Google Play Store, and the App Store. Those signing up will receive 4-Star character Francis, Mollumander Monsterling, and more.

Nihon Falcom announced a PlayStation 5 release for Ys X: Proud Nordics in Japan. The title will launch physically and digitally for the console in Japan on February 19, 2026, with pre-orders currently available. Ys X: Nordics released for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch in 2024. The game takes place between the events of Ys I & II and Ys: Memories of Celceta.
