1. Watching youtube videos about booktok and online reader communities. This channel was pretty good: According to Alina. Also found a London history youtuber I like: J. Draper.

2. Enough people mentioned bookshop.org that I finally ordered books through it when I couldn't find what I wanted from Barnes and Noble. Good experience: the correct books arrived in a reasonable timeframe, and I was able to choose my local indie bookstore.

3. Since my last post I finished A Delicate Deception (barely adequate, but it made me want to read nonfiction about the industrial revolution in Britain) and Mansfield Park (excellent all the way through). The Cautious Traveller's Guide to the Wastelands had really vivid and frightening descriptions, and I was excited about it until the end when the whole plot fell apart??? Maybe it looked fine as a plot outline, but the ending did not feel earned; sure, empires/corporations/the industrial revolution might be the *real* evil, but the book spent a long time convincingly establishing that the wastelands are in fact incredibly deadly so the conclusion just felt hollow to me.

I'm currently reading five books, most recently picking up Clear by Carys Davies.

4. I started a few Fanlore pages in July: Ship discourse and Mo Du

Joe Baby is now on Amazon. It's not a particularly good movie imho, but I liked Dichen Lachman in it and would love to see a followup of some sort with her in the same role.

Joe Baby kinda reminds me of Dex Parios and I'm kinda delighted that, going by the Goodreads blurb of the title in question, someone took a book with a male main character and decided to adapt so said character's a queer woman (going by the preview of the first four chapters, Heather Stanton in the movie is Cornell Stanton in the book, so it's possible the main character's also queer in the book but I don't feel like buying the ebook to find out).

Reading. Allie Brosh, Stuart Adlington, Liam D'Arcy + Grace Hall, Rosie Reynolds, Helena Attlee, Jeannie Di Bon, Mary Jane Paterson + Jo Thompson, Raymond Blanc )

Cooking. One more thing from East (kimchi pancakes, mildly disappointing) plus a gooseberry oat crisp I have been meaning to get to since I started picking the pink gooseberries [mumble] ago.

Eating. Ruby Violet (hazelnut + hazelnut brittle, blueberry + lemon curd). buns from home (cardamom, cinnamon, garlic + rosemary focaccia).

My first granadilla, courtesy of a whim in a supermarket!

Allotment apples and tomatoes.

Exploring. Spent a chunk of Monday afternoon poking around the Camley Street Natural Park!

Growing. There are TOMATOES. There are BEANS. I harvested some PEPPERS. I'm still not doing great at, like, efficiency or yield, but hey, I'm eating some things from the plot, which is better than none.

The poll results are in!!! Two of the options got the most votes so I'm going to do one today and one tomorrow, I guess. You can look at the previous post to see it, but I'll summarize the results in a top 4 anyway:

  1. Talk about zines and talk about exchanges got the most votes!

  2. Talk about kinks came out second place.

  3. Then my Internet anecdotes came out third place by virtue of getting one extra vote.

  4. Fourth place is taken up by sunshine_revival and Fannish 50.

I realized I forgot to explain what my unfinished Fannish 50 post was LOL, but basically it was a post of 10 fics that had a big (positive, because I don't wanna dwell on negativity) impact on me. My main issue was that I couldn't find 10 fics... I think I was at 7... ish. I suppose 7 is a good enough number though.

So, right now, the plan is: exchanges today, zines tomorrow, kinks the day after, and then maybe I'll at least tell the copycat story since it was the one people seemed most intrigued by. o7

I don't know how long this will be, kinda scared ngl. I also don't know if it's going to be interesting!!! ETA: The answer is: pretty long, and kinda negative... You've been warned, I guess! )

Closing words, whether you read my rambling or not..! I was working on some little pixel art today... I'd like to make Neopets-style adoptable for Lysandre Labs. This is a very rough WIP but I thought it might be fun to do a Litleo in different "Paintbrush" colors... We'll see how that goes...

As always, I hope whoever is reading this is having a good day, and if not, that it'll get better soon! I'd really like to get out of the house more next week, especially now that I know how to go to the nice park nearby. Maybe I'll even work on my SOD assignment there... It'll depend on the weather, though..! 🌻

Ten years

So, the tenth anniversary of my diagnosis with leukaemia happened earlier this week. I usually celebrate my survival on 1 October each year, but I'd wondered a few months ago about having a party in actual summer.

In the end I didn't organise anything for this weekend because I had a hockey game with Warbirds yesterday. This morning I took Nico to Clip n Climb, and this afternoon I met Rosie for a public skate and then we had ice creams in the sunshine. On my way back to my bike (locked by the rink) I ran into a couple of people and sorted out a few things relating to Kodiaks and next weekend's Draft Tournament in Biarritz.

Also the announcement has just gone out that I'm captaining one of the teams in Biarritz, and I'm off work now for nearly two weeks.

... and actually all of that adds up to a fantastic "up yours cancer, you didn't kill me", even without throwing a party.

Take it away, Elton:

Today is partly sunny and sweltering.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 8/17/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 8/17/25 -- I did more work around the patio.

EDIT 8/17/25 -- I watered the patio plants and the old picnic table garden.

I picked 4 goldenberries.

I've seen a male cardinal.

EDIT 8/17/25 -- I watered the new picnic table garden.

I picked 2 red cherry tomatoes.

EDIT 8/17/25 -- I watered the telephone pole garden and a few of the savanna seedlings.

I am done for the night.

Shine episode 3

That was amazing. This drama gets better and better with each episode. Actually I am glad that it has only eight episodes. Because it’s so intense, and makes me so emotional, and I’m sure, without even knowing any specific spoilers, that it won’t end with happily ever after for everyone. And I’m not talking just about romantic relationships.

A few more thoughts here, with spoilers and a link to one very hot scene. All this political stuff depresses me. Because Victor and the other students sound not really naïve, just not really prepared. And doomed. Also I want to know more. I should do homework again and read more about the 1973 revolution in Thailand and its aftermath.

As for Trin, he is painfully naïve. And he probably will have the epiphany or something like that later about the government and military not really having common people’s best interest at heart. But for now it’s quite painful to watch.

And oh wow, Krailert and Naran... WOW... I love everything about them. They are both such nerds, talking to each other through the quotes in books. Oh excuse me, flirting with each other. 😊 And then that scene in the library... Damn... *fans self* It was romantic, passionate, and scorching hot. BOC dramas always serve good NC scenes. But yes, their relationship has a tragic doomed romance written all over it. So I don’t expect a happy ending for them.

If you maybe would like to see for yourself, here is the link to the whole library scene that someone put on tumblr. 3 and a half minutes of hotness and sexiness, very NSFW of course. 😊

And please, Dhevi, get together with Veera. He’s devoted to you, and as we found out in this episode, he is a hottie, too. I’m joking right now, but ahhh, that situation is pretty depressing, too. That poor woman in a loveless marriage, begging for scraps of her husband’s attention, and now also being cheated on. Naran’s girlfriend doesn’t deserve this, too.
