Their ship had crossed paths by chance with a little clipper coming from the north, and they had chased her down under the logic that if she was slow enough to be caught, she was carrying something worth taking. What all of them had failed to recognize in the early morning gloom was that she was hobbled by a shipworm infestation and only sitting low in the water because she was still loaded with a cargo of sodden tobacco that had been turned away at Charleston.
"Son of a pox-ridden bitch," Izzy spat when he discovered the hold's sole contents. Now they were out three hours of their lives, a cannonball, and a twist of powder for the warning shot without anything to show for it.
"Do we need any sludge?" the Swede asked hopefully, poking his finger into a crate that had the distinct odour and glisten of something that had once been one kind of living thing and was hard at work becoming a distinctly different kind.
"Shut up and stop touching nasty stuff, baby," Jackie said.
