Since I last posted, my new phone sat there accusingly while I tried to ignore it. Then a friend said they'd have no idea and would need to take it to a shop to get it done, and I remembered I could get tech support!

Today a guy from GeeksOnWheels came by and struggled to get my wifi sorted so Apple would stop putting up warnings about "weak security". It took him four hours, and across much of that time I had no wifi to one or more of my devices (I'd planned ahead and downloaded fanfic). Eventually he decided my router was faulty, so I bought a new one from him and then it was resolved quickly (not a rip-off, he was very genuine). The call-out & router cost me almost as much as the new phone but it's done now and the phone (and my other devices) are working. Painless transfer of my data and apps, too. I'll need to update my iPad as well at some later point, but that should be manageable now the tricky stuff is sorted. So much for "user friendly" technology!

Got myself a Thai curry and gadogado via DoorDash as consolation for an angsty day, and now for an audiobook and arting session. Onwards!

Summary:
During waking hours, the Black-Cloaked Envoy was always at Kunlun’s side, attentive to the point where everyone assumed he meant to take Kunlun for himself. And Kunlun didn’t seem to mind! Didn’t seem to care that the Black-Cloaked Envoy was an icy, intimidating figure, famed for his skill and ruthlessness in battle. Lady Fu You had hinted that the Envoy’s reputation was partly propaganda, but Da Qing still couldn’t imagine curling up cosily to sleep with the masked man. Surely Kunlun wouldn’t want to either! Anyway, it was a simple fact that the new general’s sleeping quarters weren’t big enough for three.

Da Qing had to get there first.

the bone-joint-muscle test was awful (class average 55% excluding the two who got 100% and the fact several people didn't show up) This test for whatever reason (I suspect because it's their first real hard core physiology) is always a blood bath. I always make them work for extra credit for the test (by doing short essays on the most missed questions) Took me all night to grade it.

And all day. Had to learn new software for it but that was easy peasy.

My hip is still in horrendous pain. Fun times

Kumoricon was routine as far as my photography goes – but special regarding events and keepsakes. I achieved a rare level of buoyancy, and I actually ended up with a mild case of PCD (Post Con Depression) afterwards. Haven’t had that since the days of Anime Expo. What a surprise. Kumoricon’s Discord server had many members moaning about their PCD, and I figured I was too old for that. I guess it’s because I’ve been to so many anime cons that are all rather, shall we say, mid? Regardless, a boringly average con is still a very good photo opportunity.

So very excited that Holiday Wishes has come 'round again. I've participated for a few years now, and I've been looking forward to it. Can't wait to comb through all these lists!

Here is mine:

1) Google Play or Steam cards/credits, so I can either pamper myself a little in Pokemon Go or play games with my partner!

2) Holiday cards. Who doesn't love receiving mail, especially around the holidays? Every year I decorate my mantle with all the cards I have gotten in the mail. It's very cheerful.

3) Art of an OC of mine. I will of course provide details, if you are interested in taking a crack at it!

4) Stationary, so I can send things to my friends. This can be anything from postcards or paper stationary to washi tape, postage stamps or notecards. If you've got any laying around you won't use, or isn't quite to your taste, I'd be happy to take it off your hands!

5) Your best crock pot recipes.

6) Animorphs #51, The Absolute. It's the only one I'm missing from my collection, and for some reason, that volume in particular is very hard to find. Do you have it, boxed away in your attic, or sitting on a dusty shelf? Maybe you've spied it in a local thrift shop or used book store. My almost-complete collection would love to give it a home!

7) My Amazon list can be found HERE. It's a pretty even mix of Wants and Needs.

Thank you so much for giving my list a peek. If you need to contact me at all, please feel free to just send me a DM here on Dreamwidth, or shoot me an email at threebatchproblem AT gmail DOT com.

But I didn't sleep all day like I did yesterday, though I did sleep until 12:00 again. Then I got up and had breakfast and coffee and basically puttered around all day, either on the computer or in bed on my phone.

So that went on until 7:00 when I Teamed the FWiB, which was nice as usual. We talked til about 8:30 and then I got off and had dinner.

Then I went to the bedroom again and puttered on my phone, and called [personal profile] mashfanficchick and talked a bit. Then I called the Kid, but she didn't answer. I also texted back to Chris suggesting we meet in the city on Thursday, No answer yet, not durprising.

Fed the pets at pet feeding time, and now I'm doing this.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. Cold continues to get better.

3. Got my copy of Rabbit Hill from Thriftbooks today.

4, Eggnog.

5. Solitaire.

6. Old friends.

His latest episode's main piece was on the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, a cause dear to my heart.

It made me furious even as it made me laugh, because it's John Oliver. And the last bits made me weep like my PBS junkie inner child was in charge, because, in the best Oliverian tradition, he made me hope.

I love his work so much.

The Trouble With Mini Cows (Fidalgo Island, #1)The Trouble With Mini Cows by Juliet Chase

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

View all my reviews

I polished off the last of an ebook last night: The Trouble with Mini Cows by Juliet Chase. It’s the first in the “Fidalgo Island” series. I guess it was meant to be contemporary romance. Main character is Tessa Calhoun, with Nate Hale as a secondary.

Tess has just been drifting through life, working from home as a script writer. When she learns her grandmother has gone astray, leaving an entire herd of miniature dairy cows behind, it’s up to Tess to travel to her Gran’s home and sort out the mess. The last Tess knew, her grandmother had a few mini cows, but when she arrives she finds an entire herd of them. Tess doesn’t know the first thing about cows, but she’s about to learn. Attorney Nate needs something to be done about the cows yesterday. He wants them gone, although the more time he spends with Tess the more he hopes she’ll stick around. With the entire town placing bets on their burgeoning romance, it’s up to Tess and Nate to find a solution for the bovine conundrum.

I had some difficulty with this story. It wasn’t a mystery by any means, nor was it an overt romance. It was more a narrative of an oddball situation, in which two people meet and make a connection. In that respect, it was a likable story. However, I grew up on a dairy farm, and my eyes rolled so hard and so often it’s a wonder I didn’t see my brain.
Spoilers )

As a romance, it was enjoyable enough. I am always eager to read stories that involve animals (pets and/or livestock), but when the author fumbles the animal husbandry portion of the narrative, it ruins things for me.

Favorite lines:
♦ Thinking about making changes was a very different thing from having them forced on you.
♦ This day was going to hell fast, and it wasn’t even noon yet.
♦ “If something happens, I would have to deal with it immediately.” // “Uh-huh. What would happen if you were hit by a truck?” // “My directors would step in.” // “Then pretend you were hit by a truck, because those cows can get angry.”
♦ She supposed nine in the morning really was too early to start drinking.

I would have given this four stars. It’s well-written and entertaining, but I’m knocking one off for the hash the author made of the dairy farming aspect. Three stars.

:: Casual, predictable plans get tossed out the (closed) window when Betty’s body reacts to the winter weather. Part of the Mercedes story arc in the Polychrome Heroics Universe. This story was written for the November of 2025 Feathering the Nest prompt call, from an idea suggested by [personal profile] readera, and is posted with my deepest thanks! ::

Betty woke up to the sound of the furnace blower activating with a click-clack-’hummmmm’. Despite its eager chugging, cold air clung to her cheeks and the tip of her nose felt dull and cold. She tried to move her right foot, listening to the demanding, tight pressure of her bladder.

Pain screamed up her leg from toes to hip, then bounced backward, shattering into pins and needles that seemed to fall toward her foot, and fall through the mattress toward the center of the earth.

Cloistered - Catherine Coldstream

[personal profile] troisoiseaux
Finished Cloistered: My Years as a Nun by Catherine Coldstream, which is, as it says on the tin, a memoir about the author's twelve years (1989-2002?) in a strict Carmelite monastery* in the north of England, and HOO BOY. This read like a slow-motion (and then very fast) car crash I couldn't look away from, possibly not in the way you would expect from a memoir by an ex-nun that begins with her literally fleeing into the night to escape— her issues with monastic life seemed to be more interpersonal than institutional? For one thing, apparently Coldstream - who converted to Catholicism after losing her father and another close relative in her early 20s and was immediately like I want to spend the rest of my life as a Bride of Christ in a particularly austere, silent, cloistered order - struck the other nuns as being A Bit Weirdly Intense and Emotional; for another, there was kind of a The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie thing going on with a charismatic (in the usual, secular sense) prioress who cultivated a clique of loyalists and indulged her favored mentees while icing out others (i.e., Coldstream). ... ) On the other hand, the fundamental issue was institutional: the culture of self-sacrifice/self-denial/self-abasement and total obedience to God's will - and its flip side, that any doubt is temptation that must be overcome - is the reason she stayed for years even though she started to see the red flags before officially taking her vows. (On a third hand, Coldstream still seems pretty pro- the overall institution of the Catholic church...?) So, yeah. A fascinating, somewhat baffling read.

* Apparently the distinction is not that monastery = monks and convent = nuns, as I'd always assumed, but that a monastery is "a strictly 'enclosed' or secluded house of prayer rather than an active convent, from which nuns might typically go out to teach."
