The Trouble With Mini Cows (Fidalgo Island, #1)The Trouble With Mini Cows by Juliet Chase

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

View all my reviews

I polished off the last of an ebook last night: The Trouble with Mini Cows by Juliet Chase. It’s the first in the “Fidalgo Island” series. I guess it was meant to be contemporary romance. Main character is Tessa Calhoun, with Nate Hale as a secondary.

Tess has just been drifting through life, working from home as a script writer. When she learns her grandmother has gone astray, leaving an entire herd of miniature dairy cows behind, it’s up to Tess to travel to her Gran’s home and sort out the mess. The last Tess knew, her grandmother had a few mini cows, but when she arrives she finds an entire herd of them. Tess doesn’t know the first thing about cows, but she’s about to learn. Attorney Nate needs something to be done about the cows yesterday. He wants them gone, although the more time he spends with Tess the more he hopes she’ll stick around. With the entire town placing bets on their burgeoning romance, it’s up to Tess and Nate to find a solution for the bovine conundrum.

I had some difficulty with this story. It wasn’t a mystery by any means, nor was it an overt romance. It was more a narrative of an oddball situation, in which two people meet and make a connection. In that respect, it was a likable story. However, I grew up on a dairy farm, and my eyes rolled so hard and so often it’s a wonder I didn’t see my brain.
Spoilers )

As a romance, it was enjoyable enough. I am always eager to read stories that involve animals (pets and/or livestock), but when the author fumbles the animal husbandry portion of the narrative, it ruins things for me.

Favorite lines:
♦ Thinking about making changes was a very different thing from having them forced on you.
♦ This day was going to hell fast, and it wasn’t even noon yet.
♦ “If something happens, I would have to deal with it immediately.” // “Uh-huh. What would happen if you were hit by a truck?” // “My directors would step in.” // “Then pretend you were hit by a truck, because those cows can get angry.”
♦ She supposed nine in the morning really was too early to start drinking.

I would have given this four stars. It’s well-written and entertaining, but I’m knocking one off for the hash the author made of the dairy farming aspect. Three stars.

Today's dream was one of those where Everything Is Zombies
only the scary bit is gradually realising
you is zombies.

Only once it did The Reveal it went all, okay but I think I can talk and I can hear these other dead people perfectly well, so what are those guys with the flamethrowers complaining about? We must be speaking Deadish. It'll be because of the slurring and loss of some structures, new sound shapes, using groans and clacks as word forms. Better get some translators in. And we can still type! Time to fill in forms and get reasonable accomodations up in here!

And then we put candidates up for election and because there were so many zombies the zombie representatives won most seats, so we were going to go sort out zombie rights in zombie parliament, as you do.

Of course it being a horror movies kind of night the first wave of elected zombies just got flamethrowered, but we actually anticipated that and had half hanging back to see what would happen.

What happened is I woke up and realised I need way more ribena and actual nutrition than I got yesterday so now there is feeling zombies.

But I kind of like that my asleep brain takes zombie classics and just goes, well how do we get these people's needs met?

Changing Plans

:: Casual, predictable plans get tossed out the (closed) window when Betty’s body reacts to the winter weather. Part of the Mercedes story arc in the Polychrome Heroics Universe. This story was written for the November of 2025 Feathering the Nest prompt call, from an idea suggested by [personal profile] readera, and is posted with my deepest thanks! ::

Betty woke up to the sound of the furnace blower activating with a click-clack-’hummmmm’. Despite its eager chugging, cold air clung to her cheeks and the tip of her nose felt dull and cold. She tried to move her right foot, listening to the demanding, tight pressure of her bladder.

Pain screamed up her leg from toes to hip, then bounced backward, shattering into pins and needles that seemed to fall toward her foot, and fall through the mattress toward the center of the earth.

Cloistered - Catherine Coldstream

Finished Cloistered: My Years as a Nun by Catherine Coldstream, which is, as it says on the tin, a memoir about the author's twelve years (1989-2002?) in a strict Carmelite monastery* in the north of England, and HOO BOY. This read like a slow-motion (and then very fast) car crash I couldn't look away from, possibly not in the way you would expect from a memoir by an ex-nun that begins with her literally fleeing into the night to escape— her issues with monastic life seemed to be more interpersonal than institutional? For one thing, apparently Coldstream - who converted to Catholicism after losing her father and another close relative in her early 20s and was immediately like I want to spend the rest of my life as a Bride of Christ in a particularly austere, silent, cloistered order - struck the other nuns as being A Bit Weirdly Intense and Emotional; for another, there was kind of a The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie thing going on with a charismatic (in the usual, secular sense) prioress who cultivated a clique of loyalists and indulged her favored mentees while icing out others (i.e., Coldstream). ... ) On the other hand, the fundamental issue was institutional: the culture of self-sacrifice/self-denial/self-abasement and total obedience to God's will - and its flip side, that any doubt is temptation that must be overcome - is the reason she stayed for years even though she started to see the red flags before officially taking her vows. (On a third hand, Coldstream still seems pretty pro- the overall institution of the Catholic church...?) So, yeah. A fascinating, somewhat baffling read.

* Apparently the distinction is not that monastery = monks and convent = nuns, as I'd always assumed, but that a monastery is "a strictly 'enclosed' or secluded house of prayer rather than an active convent, from which nuns might typically go out to teach."

He lacked the typical unearthly paleness of the old vampiric houses, but his gray face was tinged with blue, and his eyes the distinctive blood red, all signs indicating that he had indeed inherited that part of his father's bloodline—even without the evidence of the small but wickedly sharp fangs that occasionally appeared around the edges of his sparing expressions.

He had not, as far as Cala could tell, made use of any of the unique abilities associated with that bloodline, even when he might be served by the judicial use of the technique of command for which the Drazhada were so known. That did not necessarily mean, of course, that he did not possess them.

Since the beginning of known history, all the Drazhada have been vampires. Edrehasivar VII is no exception.

Woke up, thought all was fine and dandy, made it to work - and dizziness hit. TMI health update or ack Vertigo ack )

Television and books

1. Watched more of Newman/Woodward doc last night - it does go into their political activities (both were liberal political activists), and into their films - and family dynamics. I'm loving the documentary - because it's not just about Newman/Woodward, but about filmmaking, and how to put a documentary together. The process geek in me - is in heaven.

Takeaway quote: When Camus read the story of Sisphysus, he said, Ah, this is a happy man, he knows his job and is satisfied in it.

Which never really occurred to me, or Ethan Hawk for that matter.

2. "The Lady's Guide to Mischief and Mayhem by Manda Collins" - is a historical rom-com/mystery hybrid, which I think is the Victorian period?
Checks - yes, 1865 (I honestly can't remember when the Victorian Period started, and well, Vertigo issues - so if you know, feel free to fact check.)

The teaser is below. But right now, it appears to be female friendship? We have a newspaper columnist/publisher hooking up with a cookbook author to co-author a column about murders - currently the Commandment Murders. And they decide to investigate murders through their column. Apparently the Inspector investigating the murders in none too pleased (seriously, why would he be?). Much chaos ensues.

Amazon blurb )

So far it's easier to read than Spinning Silver or Remarkably Bright Creatures - mainly because it is in third person and the point of view is rather clear. And there's, voila, dialogue.

3. Buffy S4 Rewatch - Superstar - sigh, there's a trope in sci-fantasy, where a Marty Stu or Mary Sue secondary character gets center stage. It's targeted towards a certain portion of the audience, which is NOT me. But, it is admittedly very popular - as evidenced by how often its done. I've never enjoyed it - I feel like it takes me away from the action, characters and story, to spend time with the author's stand-in or the author's idea of an audience stand-in (which isn't me). To give Espenson, who wrote the episode, credit - she kind of parodies/satirizes the trope? And makes fun of it. (Not my sense of humor - but I give her marks for detail, even if it's a touch too on the nose.) And she does manage to further each characters arc and relationship along the way.
cut for length and spoilers for the few out there who never saw this and still want to )

4. Buffy Sequel - Chloe Zhao - the director, and executive producer of Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale - has officially stated it is a sequel, and she fully plans on bringing back the original characters.

Go HERE

And.. HERE

"Zhao is offering some additional insights on the project and the importance of bringing in original series and new viewers, while sharing how much the original series meant to her during an interview with Variety's Awards Circuit podcast to discuss her film, Hamnet.

"It is not a reboot. It's a sequel. You can never replace these characters. I would never allow that," Zhao made clear regarding the sequel series. "And Sarah's [Michelle Gellar] back. I love my cast, the new cast. We will bring back OG characters for sure. And it is a show that bridges two generations — it's not just about the kids. I think the fandom is so important to us. We want the fandom to see themselves mirrored in the original fandom. And of course, we want new fans to join, and it's very much about both generations."

In previous interviews, Gellar has shared how Zhao's pitch for the new series and the impact that the original series had on her (and could still have on new generations) was a significant factor in her decision to return to the franchise. During the podcast, Zhao revealed how she reacted to the series finale, "Chosen" (S07E22), which aired on May 20, 2003.

"I watched religiously. I was at Mount Holyoke. We would all gather — I think it was every Thursday or Tuesday — and we would watch, because you only get one episode and you're waiting a week. It's such a ritual. I remember the last episode finishing, and we sat there; everyone was crying, and we were all holding hands. I remember looking at the screen, tears streaming down my eyes, and I said, 'Good luck to you, Buffy Summers, good luck to you.' Seeing Sarah in real life was probably one of the most stressful moments of my life."

There is something to be said for fans writing and directing the sequel? [Because often the fans of a show - watch it closer than the creator does, and notice things the creator doesn't.] But isn't it still just published fanfic, and the only reason it got this far is the fan in question has some clout and knows the right people? Also, at the end of the day - we're getting this group of fans take on the series or perspective, which may vary significantly from our own? Since we all see things so differently?

Then again, who am I to complain? I watch a daytime soap and read comic books - also watch Doctor Who off and on, not to mention Star Wars sequels and Star Trek - and that's, well, also fanfic in a way? With varying perspectives on the same thing? At the end of the day aren't all continuations by new writers a kind of fanfic? They are in a way playing with someone else's toys but in their sandbox?

Ponders. Is it fanfic or isn't it? And what exactly is fanfic? [See? This is what happens when Vertigo eats my brain? I ponder existential questions about Fanfic.]

I have achieved persimmons. I finally went to Trader Joe's. I decide to stop treating it like an Arctic expedition I need to prepare for: get up very early, shower the night before so I don't have to take time in the morning, etc. Instead, just go. It was, of course, filled with people (mostly men) just standing there (including the guy who just stepped back and almost landed on me), but I got all the sweets I need, and some I don't. And, at long last, persimmons.

When I was in Dollar Tree the other day, I bought some solar Christmas doodads for outside. I don't know if we get enough sun to activate them, it's raining or threatening rain most days. I've laid them out in the backyard to test them. And I'll peek through the blinds at night to see if they light up. But they're cute and they'll be seen in the daytime, so, good.

Day 1763

Today in one sentence: Trump rolled back reciprocal tariffs on beef, coffee, bananas, tomatoes, tea, cocoa and fruit juices to ease grocery prices that increased as a result of his tariffs; Trump threatened to back primary challengers against Indiana state lawmakers who oppose his mid-cycle congressional redistricting plan; Trump urged House Republicans to vote for the release of Justice Department files on Jeffrey Epstein, after weeks of trying to stop the vote; Trump directed Attorney General Pam Bondi to open a Justice Department investigation into Jeffrey Epstein’s relationships with Bill Clinton, Larry Summers, Reid Hoffman and JPMorgan Chase; Trump withdrew his endorsement of Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and called her a “traitor” after she joined the bipartisan effort to force a House vote on releasing Justice Department files on Jeffrey Epstein; the U.N. Security Council approved Trump’s 20-point Gaza peace plan; Trump will host Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at the White House for the first time since the 2018 killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, which a CIA assessment said the prince likely ordered; the Trump administration will designate Venezuela’s Cartel de los Soles as a foreign terrorist organization on Nov. 24; and Trump defended Tucker Carlson interviewing white nationalist Nick Fuentes, saying “you can’t tell him who to interview” and that “people have to decide,” while adding he didn’t “know much about him.”

1/ Trump rolled back reciprocal tariffs on beef, coffee, bananas, tomatoes, tea, cocoa and fruit juices to ease grocery prices that increased as a result of his tariffs. The White House said the cuts follow new trade deals and apply to products “not produced in the United States,” while Trump said he “did a little bit of a rollback on some foods like coffee.” Administration officials, however, said inflation and voter anger over grocery prices shaped the action, while some industries and lawmakers said the change showed Trump’s tariffs had raised costs. Ranchers and food producers, meanwhile, warned that broad tariff exemptions could harm domestic suppliers. The rollback comes as the Supreme Court considers whether Trump exceeded his legal authority in imposing the reciprocal tariffs. (Wall Street Journal / Washington Post / Associated Press / Bloomberg / Axios / Politico / Associated Press / New York Times / CNBC / NBC News)

2/ Trump threatened to back primary challengers against Indiana state lawmakers who oppose his mid-cycle congressional redistricting plan. He targeted Senate President Pro Tempore Rodric Bray after Bray said the Senate lacked the votes to take up maps that would expand the state’s 7-to-2 Republican delegation. Hours after Trump’s criticism, Sen. Greg Goode was the target of a swatting incident that deputies and federal authorities are investigating. Meanwhile, several Indiana Republican senators, including Jean Leising and Kyle Walker, said they would vote against redistricting because contacts from their constituents ran heavily against the plan. (Politico / NBC News / CNN / Axios / Associated Press)

3/ Trump urged House Republicans to vote for the release of Justice Department files on Jeffrey Epstein, after weeks of trying to stop a vote on the bipartisan Epstein Files Transparency Act. “We have nothing to hide,” Trump said. “It’s time to move on from this Democrat Hoax.” The House is expected to vote this week after a discharge petition gathered 218 signatures from all Democrats and four Republicans. Dozens of additional Republicans are expected to support the legislation, which would direct the Justice Department to release all unclassified records, including flight logs, travel and financial records, names, internal communications and documents about the handling or destruction of Epstein-related evidence, with redactions for victims and ongoing investigations. While Trump said he would sign the measure if it reaches his desk, its future in the Senate is unclear. (Washington Post / New York Times / NPR / Reuters / ABC News / Politico / Associated Press / Politico / Wall Street Journal / Bloomberg / Axios / CBS News / NBC News / The Guardian / Axios)

  • EARLIER: Trump directed Attorney General Pam Bondi to open a Justice Department investigation into Jeffrey Epstein’s relationships with Bill Clinton, Larry Summers, Reid Hoffman and JPMorgan Chase. Despite a July DOJ–FBI memo said investigators “did not uncover evidence that could predicate an investigation against uncharged third parties,” Bondi assigned U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton to lead the probe. The directive follows the release of thousands of Epstein estate emails, including several that mentioned Trump. (Associated Press / CNN / Politico / ABC News / The Guardian / NBC News)

4/ Trump withdrew his endorsement of Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and called her a “traitor” after she joined the bipartisan effort to force a House vote on releasing Justice Department files on Jeffrey Epstein. “All I see ‘Wacky’ Marjorie do is COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN!” Trump said, adding that he would back a primary challenger in her Georgia district. Greene responded that Trump “attacked me and lied about me,” saying his opposition to releasing the Epstein files was “astonishing really how hard he’s fighting to stop the Epstein files from coming out.” Later, she said Trump’s remarks “put my life in danger” after her office received threats and a pipe bomb scare. (Reuters / Wall Street Journal / CBS News / Associated Press / Bloomberg / NPR / Politico / New York Times / Washington Post / NBC News / Bloomberg / Politico)

5/ A federal judge ordered prosecutors to give James Comey’s lawyers all grand jury materials after finding possible government misconduct that could justify dismissing the charges. Judge William Fitzpatrick said the record showed “a disturbing pattern of profound investigative missteps,” including two misstatements of law by acting U.S. Attorney Lindsey Halligan and the use of evidence taken from a prior investigation without a new warrant. He questioned gaps in the grand jury transcript and said an FBI agent may have testified after reviewing material that included potentially privileged attorney-client communications. Comey is charged with making a false statement and obstructing a congressional proceeding based on claims that he denied in 2020 Senate testimony authorizing his associate Dan Richman to act as an anonymous source for news stories. (NBC News / The Guardian / Associated Press / Reuters / Politico / New York Times / CNN / Washington Post)

6/ The U.N. Security Council approved Trump’s 20-point Gaza peace plan. The measure passed 13-0, with Russia and China abstaining, authorizes a temporary International Stabilization Force to be deployed to Gaza and a “Board of Peace” to govern and rebuild the enclave through 2027, which would be chaired by Trump. The resolution says that after reforms in the Palestinian Authority and progress in Gaza’s redevelopment, “the conditions may finally be in place for a credible pathway to Palestinian self-determination and statehood,” and directs the United States to start a dialogue between Israel and the Palestinians on future coexistence. Arab and Muslim countries including Egypt, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Pakistan and Turkey backed the plan. Hamas rejected the resolution as “an attempt to impose international guardianship over Gaza and promote a vision biased toward the occupation.” Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that “our opposition to a Palestinian state in any territory has not changed.” (New York Times / Washington Post / Politico / Associated Press / Axios / Wall Street Journal / CNN / Bloomberg / NBC News)

7/ Trump will host Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at the White House for the first time since the 2018 killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, which a CIA assessment said the prince likely ordered. Ahead of the visit, Trump told reporters “we’ll be selling F-35s” to Saudi Arabia, despite concerns from U.S. officials that the sale could expose sensitive technology to China and affect Israel’s “qualitative military edge.” At the same time, the Trump Organization is in talks on a possible Trump-branded project in the Saudi government’s Diriyah development, which the project’s chief executive said was “just a matter of time.” Trump also said he hoped Saudi Arabia would enter the Abraham Accords “fairly shortly,” while Saudi officials continued to link any normalization with Israel to a mutual defense agreement with Washington and a “credible” path to Palestinian statehood. (CNN / New York Times / Bloomberg / Wall Street Journal / Associated Press / New York Times)

8/ The Trump administration will designate Venezuela’s Cartel de los Soles as a foreign terrorist organization on Nov. 24. Trump said that “I sort of made up my mind” about potential military action and added that “we may be having some discussions with Maduro,” while providing no details. The designation and deployments followed at least 21 U.S. strikes on alleged drug-running boats that have killed more than 80 people, actions the administration claimed targeted “narco-terrorists,” while officials have provided no public evidence linking the vessels or crews to drug trafficking. The U.S., meanwhile, continues to offer $50 million for information leading to Nicolás Maduro’s arrest. (New York Times / USA Today / NPR / Bloomberg / NPR / Axios / Associated Press / NBC News / CNN)

poll/ 29% of Americans supported using the U.S. military to kill suspected drug traffickers without court involvement, while 51% opposed it. (Reuters)

poll/ 61% of voters said extreme political rhetoric was an important contributor to Charlie Kirk’s killing, while 28% said it was caused by a disturbed person and 4% said both. (NBC News)

✏️ Notables.

  1. David Richardson resigned as acting FEMA administrator after six months. Richardson had no emergency management experience and was unreachable during July floods in Texas that killed more than 130 people. He also told staff he didn’t know the U.S. had a hurricane season. The Department of Homeland Security said Karen Evans will take over on Dec. 1. (Washington Post / CNN / Axios / Bloomberg / New York Times / ABC News)

  2. The Pentagon withdrew 200 California National Guard troops from Portland and 200 Texas Guard troops from Chicago after federal court orders stopped their deployment. The troops had been activated under federal orders in early October, but never carried out operations while legal challenges played out. About 300 Illinois Guard members will stay activated in Chicago and about 100 Oregon Guard members will remain in Portland as courts consider further appeals. (NPR / ABC News / New York Times)

  3. Border Patrol agents carried out immigration raids in Charlotte, N.C., and arrested more than 130 people over the weekend. Agents carried out arrests at churches, apartment complexes, and stores. DHS said it targeted the city because local authorities declined to honor about 1,400 immigration detainer requests. Federal officials, however, didn’t say how many of those arrested had criminal records beyond immigration violations. (New York Times / Reuters / Associated Press)

  4. New international student enrollment at U.S. colleges fell 17% in fall 2025. The Institute of International Education said 96% of institutions reporting declines cited visa application concerns, and 68% cited travel restrictions. NAFSA estimated the drop cost the U.S. economy about $1.1 billion. Total international enrollment declined about 1% when including students who enrolled in prior years. (New York Times / Washington Post / NBC News / Reuters)

  5. Trump defended Tucker Carlson interviewing white nationalist Nick Fuentes, saying “you can’t tell him who to interview” and that “people have to decide,” while adding he didn’t “know much about him.” Trump also downplayed his 2022 Mar-a-Lago dinner with Fuentes and Ye, saying “Kanye asked if he could have dinner, and he brought Nick. I didn’t know Nick at the time.” Fuentes is a Holocaust denier who has praised Adolf Hitler and promoted antisemitic and racist conspiracy theories. Meanwhile, Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts also defended Carlson in a video and later claimed he “didn’t know much about this Fuentes guy.” Heritage board member Robert P. George resigned Monday, saying Roberts refused to provide a “full retraction” of the video. (Washington Post / New York Times / Axios / PBS News / The Hill / Politico)

This will be my third year participating in Holiday Wishes!

1. Dreamwidth points and/or more premium paid time would be fantastic. If provided with the former, then I can obtain the latter myself.

2. Recommendations for any new gothic horror/gothic romance films that may have been released in the last two or three years. If it’s a Dracula adjacent film, then in all probability I may have seen it. I adored Nosferatu (2024). I am aware of Frankenstein (2025), and should be watching it soon.

3. Please consider donating to your local animal shelter, or even just volunteering.

4. Fan art inspired by any of the Dracula fanfic I’ve written over the years would be amazing.

5. An icon with my username on it, similar to what I use for my default icon, for Nosferatu (2024), Legend (1985), or House of Dark Shadows (1970).

Thank you so much in advance, and may you have a happy holiday season!

Happy hollidays!!

Hello, name's Blue! Happy to participate here again!

1. Kudos and comments on my fics! I write for Identity V and Limbus Company.

2. Steam gift cards! I like getting random small games that get my interest when I read about them, but I don't often have the money to spend. I'm also hoping for at least 10 euros as the main game I play, Limbus Company, is gonna have new season on 31st December and I'd like to get the battle pass early if possible. Let me know if you'd like to do this since I'm not familiar with how this works on Steam especially if from a different country than mine. My email is overm0re@proton.me tho I can send the Steam acc in the comments if needed.

3. More friends on dreamwidth! I mainly post about my writing and site progress and at the beginning of the month fic roundup. Want to do more at some point too, so just having more people here is nice!

4. Fanworks for one of my otps, Gregor/Sinclair from Limbus Company. Art or fic. Some prompts are under the cut, but tldr I'm not too picky about them as long as nothing in my DNW is there.

5. Extra icon slots. I have one left right now but I wanna add more icons. Anything you really can do is enough for me

Again, I studied the Kumoricon schedule in Guidebook and planned my day. If all went according to plan, I probably would do hardly any photography. I really need only one or two decent photos from the convention (for my annual photo calendars), and I was pinning my hopes on the yet unprocessed photos from Friday. Well, whatever.

On this third day of the convention, I wore my Dark Side of the Kitsune t-shirt – another Pink Floyd homage. For all three days I was in photographer black for maximum stealth.
