Rating: Teen and up
Length: 21K words

Theme: Marriage of Convenience, Alternative Professions

Summary:
Choi Soobin: Korea’s hottest leading man—who’s secretly nursing a broken heart.

Kang Taehyun: heir to the legendary Kang Entertainment—but only if he gets married first.

Reccer's Notes: I love Soobin in this - he goes from broken-hearted to agreeing to help an acquaintance (by marrying him, of course) to a devoted husband. He comes into his own as a partner over the course of this, and is more solid in himself at the end, too.

The other characters are also great. Yeonjun, in particular, just shines.

This is an online magazine that is anti-capitalist and degrowth.  It's something you can read when you get disgusted with enshittification and planned obsolescence and all that crap.

Ahh, sleep. The time away from our grounded, day-to-day realities. The time for our candy-colored clown they call the sandman to tiptoe to our room while we doze in and out of consciousness, vacillating between worlds until we land in our sleeping states for the night. A soporific scroll to lull ourselves before we cozy up into our covers, hiding from the world, opening up to REM sleep to dream a little dream or two. Dreams are fascinating. They really are windows to our thoughts, feelings, desires. Different philosophers and psychologists will have differing opinions on the meaning behind dreams. Freud, for example, believes that every dream is a deep wish.

We're not the only ones to dream at night. Our pets dream too! Have you ever seen your four-legged sweetie kicking their paws and squinting their eyes while deep in sleep? They're having a dream. I wonder what their subconscious brings to them as they doze away to cat-dreamland.

Not gonna lie, as someone who tends to wear "men’s" clothing, and having been in the UK recently, this was absolutely something I worried about.

Like this 90s sexploitation comedy universe TERFs apparently live in where men are constantly sneaking into women’s bathrooms and changerooms is entirely imaginary, but back here in the really real world the actual tangible harms of gender policing can and will come for you, and quicker than you realize, because they are by design about shrinking the presence of anyone who isn’t a masc cis man in public spaces.

1. The boys' father hasn't bought a new car yet. So we have only one car and that means things like Minisculus taking an Uber to a playdate today. I understand that these things take time, and he wants to be sure, but... I don't like having Uber as my backup. I've never actually ordered one for myself before. I downloaded the app last night.

2. The boys and their father are leaving on Thursday and I'll be alone until Sunday! I don't know what that's going to feel like.

3. I think I just finished the book bingo. Will post tomorrow. Finished the sheep detective book. Too woo-woo for me and the resolution to the murder is...underwhelming.

4. I feel bad about not updating my soap opera last week. I did so much on Saturday cleaning, running and chores and errands, that I wiped out and was pretty useless on Sunday. I do not know moderation. :/

5. I want to finish my cleaning campaign before Thursday. All that is left is 1 closet, the kitchen and front entrance and the car :)

6. I went by Walmart and got Minor a plain white dress shirt for the trip. I ordered one from Kohl's but it got stuck in shipping. The other five items in the same order arrived just fine. They've already refunded me the money (without me asking??) so, whatever, I don't care, the boys' clothes are set. Check!

7. Minisculus started soccer practices last night. Minor starts cross country at the high school tomorrow! School starts two weeks from yesterday!

Welcome back cat lovers of the internet. Everyone has existential worries as they become an adult in the world. Being a carefree child is a beautiful, but ephemeral experience. Then we become adults, we have that questioning internal monologue where we start to wonder, what's the point of all this? Why am I alive? What's the meaning of life? Does it differ for me, or is everyone in the same boat when it comes to life purpose? These questions can keep us up at night as teenagers, and also as adults. Søren Kierkegaard is known as the father of existentialism, and his version speaks to our relationship to a higher power, but that's besides the point.

Whether you agree with Nietzsche, Kierkegaard, or Camus is up to you. We don't always need to bombard ourselves with litanies of lamenting life, we can compartmentalize those questions and turn our brains off to scroll hilarious cat memes. Orange tabbies, striped tigers, and siamese kitties. Laugh off the serious stuff with some fun furries to take the edge off. Enjoy!

etymology of the day

Arancini. The small balls of risotto coated in breadcrumbs and then deep fried.

*Little oranges*.

This is not in any way an obscure or difficult to look up etymology, and yet somehow it was not until yesterday, on the tube, that I suddenly needed to look up from the book I was reading and *stare*.

(Earlier this week -- no, wait, late last week -- I was indexing a cookbook that included arancini. This week I am reading *The Land Where Lemons Grow*, because it's mostly a history of citrus cultivation in Italy with occasional recipes, so I wanted to read it Properly before indexing it and getting rid of it again. Apparently what it took for me to Have A Realisation was the combination in temporal proximity...)

Today is partly sunny and sweltering.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a flock of sparrows and house finches.

EDIT 8/12/25 -- I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 8/12/25 -- I potted up 12 sweet cherry seeds.

EDIT 8/12/25 -- I did some work around the patio.

EDIT 8/12/25 -- I did more work around the patio.

EDIT 8/12/25 -- I watered some plants on the old and new picnic tables that were wilting, then did the telephone pole garden and a few of the savanna seedlings.  I'm annoyed that some plants are wilting so soon after copious  watering, because I can't haul that hose around every day, or even every few days. >_<

I've seen a skunk on the patio.

I am done for the night.

I'm doing well! I've been home for a few days now, after spending a week at the family summer place with my parents, my sister, and her kids. A good time was had, with no family quarrels! \o/

Before that, I had a visit from [personal profile] exeterlinden and her two kids. We had not met in person for eight years (because kids), and had very little contact during that time, but we just reconnected instantly. It was lovely. <3

Current delicious produce from the garden: potatoes, swedes, young beets and carrots, cabbage, chard, leek, onions, garlic, herbs, broad beans, green beans, green peas, zucchini, aubergine, tomatoes, and chiles. I LOVE just going out and harvesting what I need for cooking! We just took up all the onions, and they are now drying in the sun. I think they will be a substantial portion of our yearly consumption.

Today I got one of the ducks to eat from my hand, by means of lying down prone on the grass and stretching out my hand with food on it. They are such ridiculous little duck-billed dinosaurs. Edvin who was previously one of our favorites has unfortunately turned into a schoolyard bully, perhaps because the males from the first group of ducklings from the spring are now old enough to be seen as a threat to his fragile masculinity. The second group of ducklings are now almost full-sized, and we can see their adult colors, though not yet what sex they are.

I hardly ever buy cook books, but a while ago I bought two by the same author, which fit my current needs perfectly: the first one has chapters on various vegetables, and the second on various fruits and berries, so if you've got a particular vegetable/fruit/berry, you can get recipes and inspiration as to what to do with it. They are in Swedish though. He's big on using fruits and berries in savory cooking, and here's a delicious recipe I made yesterday: Read more... )

We have said once if we have said it a thousand times, cat rescues are trouble. Not that it means that we should not do them, but when you lay your hands on a cat who desperately needs help, it is worth knowing about at least some of the many things that act can make happen. For some it is an emergency trip to the vet, for others it is a case of the original owners turning up at the last moment, and in the case of this story, it is absolute lunacy that makes little sense and uses the rescuer as a scapegoat.

A truly difficult position to be placed in and an even tougher one to get out of. So come with us on the journey of one woman who just wanted to spare a mamma catto and her kitten from another night of sickness, who found out the hard way that sometimes what you give, is not what you get back.

We love updates on adoption stories. Few things warm our hearts more than seeing how a rescue cat transforms once they've found their forever home. In fact, we recently went around the I Can Has Cheezburger office and asked our fellow cat parents for updates on their adopted kitties - and the responses made us melt. Here are a few favorites:

  1. "She still won't let me pick her up, but she purrs so loudly I'm sure the neighbors can hear"
  2. "He used to hide under the bed for hours - now he hides under the bed for fun"
  3. "We thought she was shy, turns out she's just judging us from the top of the fridge"
  4. "He destroyed three couches before realizing laps are better than scratching posts"
  5. "Her zoomies now last about 15 seconds. Retirement life suits her."
  6. "We rescued him… but really, he rescued us."

Every update is a reminder that adoption isn't just about saving an animal - it's about watching love, trust, and joy grow day by day.

Zoe Ardelay and her father have lived in exile in a small village since he, a former courtier, had an argument with the king. At the opening of the book, her father has just died of natural causes. Then Darien, the king's advisor, shows up and announces that Zoe has been chosen as the king's fifth wife. Zoe, immersed in the drifting, passive phase of grief, sets out with him for the capital city she hasn't seen since she was a child. The story does not go in any of the expected directions after that, starting with the conveyance they use to get there: a new invention, a gas-powered automobile.

This small-scale fantasy is the first of five "Elemental Blessings" books, but stands alone. It does end up involving the politics and rulership of a country, but it's mostly the story of one woman, how her life changes after her father dies, and the relationships she has with the people she meets. It's got great characters and relationships, focuses on small but meaningful moments in a very pleasing manner, and has outstandingly original worldbuilding. Most of it is not set in court, and involves ordinary poor and middle-class people and settings. The vibe is reminiscent of early Robin McKinley.

Welce, the country it's set in, has two aspects which are crucial to both plot and character, and are interestingly intertwined. They may seem complicated when I explain them, but they're extremely easy to follow and remember in the actual book.

The first aspect is a system of elemental beliefs and magic, similar to a zodiac. The elements are water, air, fire, earth, and wood. Every person in the country is associated with one of those elements, which is linked with personality characteristics, aptitudes, aspects of the human body, and, occasionally, magic. This is all very detailed and cool - for instance, water is associated with blood, wood with bone, and so forth. We've all seen elemental systems before, but Shinn's is exceptionally well-done. The way the elemental system is entwined with everyday life is outstanding.

How do people know which element is theirs? Here's where we get to the second system, which I have never come across before. Temples, which are not dedicated to Gods but to the five elements, have barrels of blessings - coins marked with symbols representing blessings like intelligence, change, courage, joy, and so forth. Each blessing is associated with an element. People randomly pull coins for both very important and small occasions, to get a hint of what way they should take or, upon the birth of a child, to get three blessings that the child will keep for life. The blessings a child gets may or may not show their element - if they don't, it becomes clear over time based on personality.

The blessings are clearly genuinely magical and real, but often in subtle ways. I loved the blessings and the way they work into the story is incredibly cool. Same with the elements. Zoe's element is water, and her entire plot has a meandering quality which actually does feel like a water-plot, based on the qualities ascribed to water in the book.

I would recommend this to anyone who likes small-scale, character-based fantasy AND to anyone who likes cool magic systems or worldbuilding. It's not quite a cozy fantasy but it has a lot of cozy aspects. I can see myself re-reading this often.

There are five books, one for each element. I've since read the second book, Royal Airs. It's charming and enjoyable (and involves primitive airplanes, always a bonus) but doesn't quite have the same lightning in a bottle quality of Troubled Waters.

Global warming is causing weather events to become more extreme, and society must adapt. What does this look like in a local context? A team from the Research Institute for Sustainability (RIFS), together with the Erftverband and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), used a real-world lab in the Erft catchment area, which is located near the Ahr Valley that was affected by flooding in July 2021, to investigate the extent to which ethical and social issues also play a role in adaptation processes.
