The setting definitely made them worth the read for me. If you haven't read The Jade Peony by Wayson Choy, that's one set in the same period that I really loved—although that's Vancouver, not the Gulf Islands and Victoria (and a bit of the Interior) like these ones, and those are even rarer settings to come across.
