Cells and blocks and amoeba
And I'm feeling a bit extra whiny today because I got vaccinated and my arm hurts.
The MCSR Midoffs s2 have started and are live right now: the first match was already absolute cinema, so many plot twists in one match. I watched the first two and I definitely want to watch Cub play later, but I took a break to play more Silksong (and other stuff.) I'm practicing the final boss rn a few attempts at a time, very cool fight.
Tomorrow season 11 of Hermitcraft starts! I'm excited. Can't wait to find out what new gimmick they've come up with, who bases with who (fingers crossed for a few neighbors I'm hoping for - mostly Buttercups tbh), all their plans...
(come to think of it, didn't Joe want to post more s10 videos at some point? ^^)
Side effect, this is not going to help my "too many things and never enough time" problem at all.
I finally managed to read a book that's been on my to-read list for a long time: Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir.
( Thoughts with spoilers )
Another book in the category of "if I hadn't had high expectations because I saw so many recs I wouldn't have felt disappointed." I still enjoyed it overall.
I think a little rejoicing is in order?
I.e. after all the faff and fuss and distraction
I GOT THE REVIEW DONE!!!
And then spent a fair amount of time fiddling around with it and niggling at it and trimming it and so on -
- but then I managed to upload it to the journal site, via a link from the Reviews Editor which may not have required me to either remember a password I created in the dim mists of past time or create a new one, but still involved the inordinate amount of annoying these journal sites are.
And lo and behold, this very morning after, it has been accepted, no corrections, no revisions, now in the editing process, copyright form forthcoming.
Phew.
One last book to review on the pile, should I put myself forward to review v interesting work just out from old mate? Have other stuff to be thinking of....
As previously mentioned, also managed to get the downstairs backroom communicating with the world again. Though getting the unwanted TP-Link returned looks a bit more arduous.
Plus, have had a haircut.
very odd
When I looked up at it, I could see five white slashes in the sky, what looked like contrails from jets -- but they didn't budge, and there were no planes on the front of them to make the slashes longer. The slashes curved downward, not what you expect with an airplane trail. The longest one was closer to me, and they got smaller moving away.
All perfectly parallel, all curving downward. All unmoving. They looked like claw marks on the sky from an enormous bear.
Those were on the left. On the right, a regular contrail indicated a plane heading toward one of the local airports, probably Dulles. I could see that trail growing longer, while the others didn't move.
After I got home, I checked the 'net to see if something up above the atmosphere had broken, like a satellite, and was falling down, but didn't find anything.
It was still so weird.
And this was on my mother's birthday. She would have been 111 this year if she were still alive. I miss her every day, though as I get older I get a longer view of her life, seeing how one thing and another influenced her, and how she managed.
But still. Bear claws.
Late but still trying.
This is the cry that rends the Veils; this is a prayer for Resistance.
Samhain is a dark festival, the feast of the dead, a crone’s picnic. Samhain is a Sabbat of Resistance.
The bones beneath the Earth cry out, and, more than that, the colonizers fear that they will. The hungry crowd the dumb supper table and, more than that, the greedy fear that they will. The chains of slaves clank in the graveyard and, more than that, the slavers fear that they will.
This is the cry that rends the veils; this is a prayer for Resistance.
Samhain is a dark festival, the feast of the dead, a crone’s picnic. Samhain is a Sabbat of Resistance.
The ancestors throb in our blood and the merchants of Lethe try to distract. Our raped grandmothers drag ragged nails across their cheeks and the armies wish that they wouldn’t. Under the earth, dead children scream for their fathers and Wall Street distracts us with sex and beer.
This is a prayer for Samhain; this is a prayer for Resistance.

Owls hoot in the darkness and the guilty fear that wisdom. Bats flap against a dark Moon sky and the predators quiver in fear. The innocent of Salem jerk at the end of the rope and the church collects the money.
This is a prayer for Samhain; this is a prayer for Resistance.

Samhain is a dark festival, the feast of the dead, a crone’s picnic. Samhain is a Sabbat of Resistance.
Samhain is how our ancestors paid for the right to be part of the cycle. Samhain is how they remembered the mighty dead, the miscarried child, the beloved ancestors. Samhain is how they built a bridge to the Isle of Apples, how they ate both the flower and the seed, how they saw a Spring at the end of Winter. May we have their courage.

May it be so for you.

Burnout Syndrome
Finally the official trailer is here. And it looks fantastic – intense and darkly sexy, with complicated people in complicated, messy relationship. And now, even more than before, I want DewGun and OffGunDew to happen in this drama. Please, please, give it to me. 🙏
It starts airing on November 26.
My Chef in Crime
Jeff Satur cooking, solving crimes, and possibly also being a serial killer? And looking so good while doing all that? Yes, please, sign me up, so much.
This is a pilot trailer, so the drama, if it will get made, will air somewhere in 2026.
The Price of Confession
I watch one GL drama taking place in prison. And that kdrama looks like another one. I mean, it is a mainstream kdrama, so definitely nothing GL will happen. But wow, it looks so good. Dark and emotional and full of femslashy subtext.
It’s about a woman, who gets accused of murdering her husband. She goes to prison, and meets another prisoner there. Someone everyone calls a witch, who is apparently a psychopathic killer. And that witch is played by Kim Go Eun, who looks so gorgeous with very short hair.
It starts airing on Netflix on December 5.

The final tally on the treat sheet was 79 out of the starting 225 -- that puts us just shy of reaching tier 2 (75 remaining). That's still a very good percentage, so cheers to the valiant treaters!
Thank you everyone for another wonderful Trick or Treat!

Meme picked up from
Find me at
1. Under what rating do you write most?
To my surprise, "General Audiences" (68) only barely edges out "Teen and up" (66). Interesting. (There are also 5 "Mature;" I remember just 2 of those off the top of my head.)
2. What are your top 3 fandoms?
- Forever Knight (TV 1992) (88)
- Highlander: The Series (18)
- Dungeons and Dragons (Cartoon) (8)
3. Which character do you write about most?
Historically and altogether, of course it is Nick Knight (58). That's too obvious and predictable.
4. What are the 3 top pairings you've written?
My most frequently-written FK pairing is Nick/Natalie, HL Duncan/Tessa, and Sailor Moon Darien/Serena. (These are not the top three overall, but listing just FK all the time feels dull and distant.)
5. What are the top 3 additional tags?
This is the question that makes this meme most interesting, as I would not have guessed, though I really should have if I'd thought it through mathematically:
- Post-Canon (27)
- Historical (24)
- Flashbacks (16)

Today's News:
tapioca

Thanks, WikiMedia!
Boba pearls are, as you know Bob, made from tapioca. Cassava is native to northern Brazil but is cultivated in lowland tropical regions worldwide, and is the staple food in many places (the root can be ground into flour). The name cassava is not Tupian, so stick a pin in that -- the Tupi name for the plant is manioc, which is also sometimes used in English but not as widely. The name tapioca is, via Portuguese, from Old Tupi tapi'oka, literally "pulp squeezed out (from cassava)."
And because I've got one more food on the list, a bonus word: cayenne (kai-EN) - n., any of several very hot chili peppers; a condiment made by grinding the pods and seeds of these peppers; a strong red-orange color. Formerly cayan but respelled to match Cayenne, the capital of French Guiana (itself an alteration of Guyana), because of that territory does like the spicy, but actually from Old Tupi ky'ynha/quiínia, hot pepper.
And that wraps up two weeks of words from Tupian languages -- a next week will be another round of regular mix before moving onto another New World language source.
