[pain] today in Descartes: green is the best colour because it is most like an octave

... Nor shall I say what objects of vision must be agreeable or disagreeable to it; for from what I have already said about the other senses, it is easy to grasp that light that is too strong will injure the eyes and moderate light must refresh them; and that, amongst the colours, green, which consistss in the most moderate action (which by analogy one can speak of as the ratio 1:2), is like the octave among musical consonances, or like bread among the foods that one eats, that is, it is the most universally agreeable.40

40 What the basis of this remark is is unclear, and although various writers have made suggestions about the relations between colours and sounds, the attempt to quantify green on a par with an octave certainly cannot be sustained. It is worth noting that Descartes will later advice Elizabeth to rid her mind of sad thoughts by reflecting on the greenness of a wood (Descartes to Elizabeth, May/June 1645, AT iv. 220).

8 week old kitten gets adopted by nervous 19-year-old college student, she worries she's not cut out

Posted by Briana Viser

Getting a new kitten is akin to having a baby – you're constantly on guard taking care of something. You need to be on high alert around your little kitten. In any moment, it could get into trouble that you'll have to save it from. It could destroy something, it could eat something it shouldn't, or it could need food when you didn't know it was hungry. It's a lot of responsibility, and on top of being a teenager who already feels like the weight of the world is on her shoulders, it can be the cherry on top of your stress levels.

That's exactly what happens in the story below. The protagonist is a 19-year-old college student who's always wanted a kitten. Her mother has had a phobia, which has inhibited her from getting one, but finally her mom gives in. She finds that she's filled with some level of regret, and starts to question her life choices. Read the full story below for all the details.

A Delicious Feast of Cat Memes Specially Selected For Pre-Thanksgiving Festivities

Posted by Briana Viser

Thanksgiving is approaching rather quickly. It's an annual favorite for most – who can resist the turkey roasting in the oven, the fire rolling, the distant family members showing up to give you that once-a-year hug and tell you how much you've grown? Here at ICanHasCheezburger, we love Thanksgiving festivities. Every good cat parent knows that our furry felines are just a part of the festivities as hoomans are. As Thanksgiving approaches, the mood shifts from chaos to cozy. Families gather, kitchens fill with delicious chaos, and somewhere in the background, a cat inevitably knocks over the gravy boat. Cat memes perfectly capture this pre-feast energy: the lazy loafs perched near the oven's warmth, the mischievous paws reaching for the pumpkin pie, and the judgmental stares that silently ask why they don't get a plate at the table.

It's no secret that cats think they're the center of every celebration. While we hoomans spend hours marinating, chopping, and basting, cats are the true overseers of Thanksgiving preparations. They supervise with regal indifference, batting at stray green beans and curling up in laundry baskets full of freshly washed tablecloths. These memes immortalize what cats bring to the table – the smug kitty wearing a pilgrim hat, the fluffy feline buried in mashed potato dreams, and the tabby claiming the turkey leg before anyone else.

It's the worst possible time of the year

The Christmas music has started. Carols at Loblaws, some soprano with too much vibrato; piano music at Arisu but the horrible modern standards, Last Christmas, All I Want For Christmas, yadda yadda. Must bring my earplugs with me wherever I go now, to block both music and happy happy conversations in my vicinity. At least the Americans don't start this until after the end of November, the one good side effect of having Thanksgiving when they do. Up here it's evidently 'anything within six weeks is fair game.'

Shouldn't buy pseudo-Bailey's when I have to go for a blood draw next week but screw it: I have pseudo-Bailey's and am drinking it. Should not drink period but equally should not take Ibuprofen for the owies so must drink. Alcohol causes cancer, ibuprofen causes strokes but guards against cancer, what you gonna do?

pootling through life

Annual leave is so nice but now I have to go back to work on Monday :(. On the other hand, I do still have a whole weekend first, even if it's relatively busy. The deacon trainee is being ordained acolyte and lector on Sunday and some of the training people showed up last weekend and Announced that we would be providing more servers than we actually have seats for and also a thurifer, and since I am presently the only thurifer available, I have to go. Truly I am punished for not having arranged the training I was supposed to be organising back in the spring before Mum got sick. Fortunately one of my four Sunday video calls has rescheduled so it's a slightly less ludicrous calendar than might have been the case.

Anyhow. I have done very little; read two turn-of-the-century novels (nineteenth to twentieth, that is), finally caught up with laundry after getting out of cycle while I was with Mum, got through the three Tablet issues I had waiting and started the one that arrived today, did the tragically overdue washing up, and went to the cinema to see The Choral. I enjoyed it! I would say it was a war story more than a choir story, but Gerontius is important to the plot and I did like what they did with it. And, much as I love superhero films, it's nice to see something that isn't one of the endless sequels, remakes, shared universes, etc etc, that make up most cinema these days.

I also progressed my ebook catalogue a bit - went through all my StoryBundle purchases, downloaded anything that wasn't on my phone and therefore in the catalogue already, and added them to the catalogue (along with the source) and the phone. Also added a sheet for audiobooks and put in the ones I've bought from libro.fm since I started my subscription. Next up would be the various Humble Bundles, which is a much larger number of bundles and piles of audiobooks as well as ebooks, so I've put that off until another week...

"Shane, Come Back."

Posted by clavdivs

'Shane, the ending' (slyt. 2:12)
"I've come across another Mandela effect online, this one involving the classic Western, Shane. Some people - and I'm one of them - are convinced that after calling out "Come back, Shane!" several times, little Joey Starrett's final words in the film are "Bye, Shane."(yt..36)

"Within the confines of Shane, a classic, mythical Western, he (Ladd) seems uncannily at home. Chosen from two recurring elements of the Western genre, the gun fight and the bar fight, I decided to analyze the spectacular barroom brawl that takes place at Grafton's supply store. True, the film has an explosive gunfight near the end of the film that pits Alan Ladd's Shane with one of cinema's all-time greats, Jack Palance..." 'Shane and modern masculinity in Western genre'
"On the surface the plot of Shane pits the 'good guys' vs. 'bad guys' and conflict is resolved by intimidation, fists, and then guns, in conventional Western fashion. But rather than glorifying the use of weapons or violence, the film surprises in that it is arguably an elegy for the inability of humans to find other solutions." 'The Unexpected Beauty in 'Shane' (1953)

If I Fits I Sits - Sink Edition: 23 Hilarious and Wholesome Photos of Curled Up Cats to Wash Away Yo

Posted by Laurent Shinar

When we think of If I Fits I Sits, we usually have images of boxes stuffed full of cats, fur spilling over the edges of the box. However, cats being the clever and creative creatures that they are, have a variety of sitting locations that they like to stuff themselves into. One of them being the bathroom sink, the purrfect place to exact revenge.

For you see this sitting spot is all about blocking access to the tap, and if a pawernt were to be so bold as to use the tap anyway and release a stream of water upon their cat they would be met with an affront on their arms and hands the likes of which has never been seen. So step right up and get ready to scroll through the sweet chill sauce of cat sitting positions

boost: Adam Engst Learns Seven Agentic Web Browsers Can't Count

from someone who's a realist-for-now yet also wants to believe.

Adam Engst on Can Agentic Web Browsers Count?

tl;dr No, given a readily available data set on a webpage, they can't.

The sweetest and scariest part was his sympathy for Copilot's very anxious inner monologue as it tried to come up with answers while working to a deadline that nobody had created.

When it comes to system prompts, the anxious tone of Copilot’s internal responses suggests a “ship now, apologize later, if you’re caught” system prompt that, if reflected in a real-world workplace, would be problematic. Obviously, AIs don’t have feelings that can be hurt and won’t complain to HR, but such a culture tends to encourage people to cut corners and make poor decisions that compromise quality and customer service. If Copilot is any indication, the same is true for AIs.

Um what

Dear Miss Manners: What is the polite way to eat large sushi rolls? Sometimes they’re too big to comfortably eat whole without gagging!

Dissect them.

Miss Manners does not usually condone deconstructing food in public, but these are desperate times. Use your chopsticks to pull out the insides and eat them separately. Then either squish the remaining rice and seaweed together and eat it in two bites or use the side of the chopstick to cut it in half.

Perhaps the sight of their beautiful creations being desecrated will inspire the chefs to make more manageable bites. Or at least have them wonder why everyone is suddenly ordering them as takeout instead.

It's that time of the year...

My little corner of the northern hemisphere is getting colder, and the weather has been utterly horrendous, cold and wet and WINDY with gusts of sleet and rain aaaaah. Miserable.

Which can only mean...

It's Skyrim time!!

As usual, I'll probably end up stopping whenever I've built a house to my liking (one needs a home blacksmith forge you know!!) (sometimes two), but we'll see :D

And no I still have never finished the game despite pouring hundreds of hours in it over the years, and starting many many new games!! It could happen someday, though!

Do you have any seasonal games you replay? :D

Hallowe'en Parties

Forgot to write about this weekend last year, I'm not going to forget about it this year.

Our original plan was to go out on Friday night, taking the train right after I was done with work, but [instagram.com profile] sashagee was feeling really awful and so we stayed in and decided to go out the next day. Saturday morning dawned and fortunately [instagram.com profile] sashagee was much better, and Poppa and Nana kindly drove out to get us in Chicago and brought us back to their home in Batavia. We got there around 11:15 a.m., dropped off all our stuff, and then got Laila ready because it was time for Batfest:

2025-10-25 - Laila's Bluey Costume

This is the only picture of Laila in her costume that we got--no matter what we could not get her to look at the camera--and for a chunk of the event she was pretty anxious. There were a lot of people out and about on the streets, looking at the booths of people selling farmer's market foods and arts and crafts, but once we got past that and went to some of the stores that were giving out candy, that's when Laila really got into it. She still wanted me to carry her for a big chunk of it but once she realized people were handing out candy, that's when she got down and interacted with people. Her best interaction was probably with the people at a driving school, where she actually said "Trick or Treat!" to them. They were sitting down at the other end of the room after a long morning of handing out candy, though, which might be why.

When we passed by Batavia Creamery, though, Laila got really animated and asked for ice cream, so we went in and got candy and then stayed for a treat.

We walked up and down Wilson seeing if there were any more stores offering candy, getting Laila a couple more pieces, and then called it a day and went back home. While Laila played with Poppa and [instagram.com profile] sashagee rested upstairs, I went out on a walk in the neighborhood to look a the leaves--while the trees are just on the cusp of starting to change in the city after the long and unseasonable heat we've had, in the suburbs they're much further on and I was able to see some really nice oranges, yellows, and reds, even though the weather was cloudy. I stayed out for about an hour, making sure to get enough steps to close my rings on my watch, and then went home just in time for everyone to be back. [instagram.com profile] sashagee was up, Laila was inside, and everything was as it should be, just in time for us to head to our next event--[facebook.com profile] mabown's annual Hallowe'en Party. There's a different theme every year, and last year was themed as a murder mystery that we had to solve--[instagram.com profile] sashagee got extremely into it, hence why I'm sad I didn't write about it at the time. This year was a speakeasy, including needing to know the password to get in...but we showed up right when someone was guessing it so we didn't have to actually do anything but follow them in.

Down below was the bar, manned by [facebook.com profile] zbrund:
2025-10-25 - Halloween Party Speakeasy Basement

We got drinks, hung out, and chatted with people. That was basically the theme of this party--it was much more low-key than last year, since last year there people were running around trying to find all the clues and piece them together, but this year the one mystery was the password and, well, I already mentioned how that went for us. We had a nice time but only ended up staying a couple hours because [instagram.com profile] sashagee started feeling sick, and seriously enough so that we left a couple hours early and drove home so she could go to bed. And that ended up being the theme for the rest of the weekend, because Sunday she slept most of the day, Poppa and Nana played with Laila (and I did too, but I wanted to give them more time) and I went on another walk and looked at the leaves, this time in the sunshine. Just after dinner, my parents drove us home, and [instagram.com profile] sashagee went right to sleep after putting Laila to bed.

A lovely start to the weekend, but kind of a disappointing ending. Laila had a good time, though, and I'm glad I got some walks to look at those trees.

‘Then I felt a kick, a big one too. I look at her belly and had seen that she was in fact pregnant.’

Posted by Laurent Shinar

The Cat Distribution System has done it again, folks. And this time they have really out done themselves, like seriously we cannot quite get our heads around how the heck they pulled this one-off. For today, we get to share the tale of a pregnant cat momma who one day decided to waltz into a hoomans house and begin being all sweet and playful. Like she was begging her soon-to-be hooman to take pity on her and adopt her into his family.

A rather stark contrast to the usually scared, scratchy and sometimes angry cattos who turn up in hoomans' lives through the CDS. And to boot, they gave her a Disney princess name, only adding to the magic of the moment. This is truly one of the sweetest and most surprising stories we have come across from the Cat Distribution System, and all we can say is that we hope every cat lover could get this lucky.
