Episode 2664: Brie Encounter

Episode 2664: Brie Encounter

If any player ever says, "We don't want any trouble," while in character, honestly you're almost obliged to cause them trouble at that point. Remember, no non-violent platitude is a get-out-of-a-fight-free card.

Oh, I guess this was a moment for Rey to show off again, then. Was the lightning not quite enough? Or did the writers just decide they wanted another "Rey beats up a crowd" moment like in Episode VII? That said, I guess the GM was feeling generous because the leader didn't simply try and shoot after hitting the group. Maybe an artifact of being able to parse individual moves step by step? Action scenes are hard to tell how fast things move in, so it could be that the gun was swung up just as Rey pointed the lightsaber.

What's also interesting is that all of these armed thugs are wearing helmets. Are they wannabe Mandalorians or something? I'd thought that series was made like a year before this Episode, but perhaps this particular scene is why The Mandalorian got produced in the first place. Or maybe it was a minor tie-in and they were released at the same time? I could see that as well depending on the timing of things.

Phone, again [me, tech]

Whelp, it looks like I'm in the market for a cell phone again.

On Saturday night, I noticed something dangling from the corner of my cell phone, which immediately struck me as odd, as there's no aperture in the protective gel case there for something to get stuck. Well, there's not supposed to be. On further inspection, I discovered the corner of the gel case no longer fit over the corner of the phone, and some random shmutzig had gotten wedged... between the back plate of the phone and the rest of the phone, to which it was no longer attached along the bottom. Pressing it back down didn't work: something in the middle of the phone was causing resistance to closing the phone.

Lo, verily, my phone's battery was pregnant.

Some of you who follow me on the fediverse might be thinking, "Wait, didn't you just replace a phone, the battery of which swelled up?" Lol, yes: late April. That was my work phone. This is my personal phone. Lolsob.

So, being a proper nerd, I went right to iFixit to order myself a battery. Whereupon I was stopped by something that did not bode well. I entered my phone's model information and iFixit, instead of telling me what battery to buy, alerted me that it is not possible to determine what kind of battery my phone took from the outside.

It turns out that the OnePlus 9 G5 can take one of two batteries, and which one a given OnePlus 9 G5 takes can only be determined by putting eyes on the battery which is in it.

Well, okay then: I clicked through the helpful link to read instructions on how to pull the battery on a OnePlus 9 G5. I read along with slow dawning horror at exactly how involved it was and how many tools I would have to buy, and made it to step twelve – "Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the ten 3.8 mm-long screws securing the motherboard cover. One of the motherboard cover screws is covered by a white water ingress sticker. To unfasten the screw you can puncture the sticker with your screwdriver." – of thirty and decided: fuck this, I will hire a professional.

(I think maybe it was a fortunate thing that I went through the prior fiasco with trying to change the battery on the Nuu B20 5G, first, because it softened me to the idea of maybe I don't have to service all my electronics personally myself.)

Alas, it was late on a Saturday night and all the cell phone repair places around me were closed until Monday.

Fortunately, I had a short day Monday and would be getting out of work around 5:30pm. I called ahead to a place that is open to 7pm to ask if I needed an appointment and whether they did OnePlus phones. There was a bit of a language barrier with the guy who answered the phone, but he said no appointment was necessary and whether they could fix my phone would entail putting eyes on it, and please try to come before 6pm to give them time to fix it before they close.

So after work, Mr B took me there, and we presented the phone. Dude got the back of the phone the rest of the way off the phone with rather more dispatch that I would be have been able to, and pretty quickly discovered that he was in over his head. Credit where it's due – "A man's got to know his limitations" – he promptly backed off, and told me to bring it back tomorrow when the more-expert boss was in.

I'm slightly irritated that we made the unnecessary trip instead of him saying, "Oh, a OnePlus, come tomorrow when our OnePlus expert is in", but it did give me the extra time to do more thorough backing-up. I have never managed to get Android File Transfer to work, nor any a number of alternatives; snapdrop.io would only do single files at a time, not whole directories, and, weirdly, Proton Drive, both app and website, doesn't allow uploading whole directories from Android either.

Finally, I saw a mention that the Android app Solid Explorer "does FTP". I wanted to make a local backup to my Mac, but, fuck it, I have servers, I can run FTP somewhere just to get my files backed up off my phone. Imagine my surprise on opening up the "FTP" option on Solid Explorer and discovering it wasn't an FTP client it was an FTP server. Yes, the easiest way I found to exchange files between my Android phone and my MacBook Pro was to put an FTP server on my phone.

Worked fine. My FTP client on my Mac sucks, but I'll solve that another day. (Does Fetch still exist?)

Mr B and I discussed it and decided he'd bring the phone in the next day, Tuesday, to spare me the hike. He returned with the phone, still with the back off, and the news that they had discovered, as I had, you have to get at the battery to even figure out which battery to order. And that he was told that the battery would be in by 3pm the next day (Wednesday). The only surprising thing here is that they could get the battery that fast.

So, today (Wednesday), after 3pm, Mr B took my phone back for a third visit, and they attempted to install my new battery.

It was the wrong battery.

Hwaet! The saga continues... )

The Day in Spikedluv (Wednesday, Aug 20)

Between Midnight and my bladder, I was up before 4am this morning, over an hour before the alarm went off. The original plan was to go back to bed, but I didn’t think I’d get back to sleep so I just stayed up and fed the cat. (So if you saw an early post and/or comments from me, that’s why.)

I had chiropractic and dental appointments this morning. I hit the Pharmacy while I was downtown, but decided not to walk around the park in the rain. Because I might melt. *g*

I did two loads of laundry (both washed, dried AND folded!), hand-washed dishes and emptied the dishwasher, baked chicken for the dogs’ meals and cut up some of said chicken for said meals, scooped kitty litter, and showered. I made cornbread to go with the chili. I also did some banking for mom.

I visited mom, read more in Hatshepsut, watched some HGTV programs, and got ~3,500 more words typed in! I had some extra time between appointments this morning, so I spent it typing. Based on the number of hand-written pages left, I’m estimating ~2,000 more words need to be typed in. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel!

Temps started out at 57.6(F) (and according to TWC app, the high today is supposed to be 57, so not only is it going to be cool, it’s not going to get any warmer!). It started raining about 4am and rained most of the day. The heavier rain was in the morning while the afternoon was mostly sprinkles and drizzles. Despite the all day rain we only got about an inch. Temps topped out at 54.5. Yep, the temps just went down from the morning. I actually turned on the furnace for a short time to get rid of the chill/damp in the house. (Pip even turned on the oil burner at work!)

Crash after the editing high

I knew editing at that pace wouldn't be sustainable, and was firmly in "make the most of it while it lasts" mode but man, I've been struggling with the post-high crash. I know, I know, that "being at your 100%" looks very different on different days, and it felt like I was running at like 140% for a while on top of that but damn. The difference is crushing, and I get frustrated enough to tear up. I'm not sure if it's because the first half of the year was so bumpy and it left me more brittle, or because it's so rare that I get a writing high from editing rather than drafting but gaaah. I just remember my first NaNo, the only one I won back in 2006, and how creativity seemed to just feed off itself... like I was writing so much, all of the time, that when a couple of strange little events happened I ended up writing a couple of short stories about them too, on top of my 1.6k words a day. Glorious times. And during the lockdowns I was writing during my lunch breaks, too. Even if not quite at that level of intensity, I'd love to catch that spirit again, and on days when I can have several intense, focused writing sessions, it feels like getting closer. I probably need better systems. Mornings are fine, I have a good routine in place and that time is mostly under my control, but later in the day I struggle and flail to even catch 15 minutes of focused writing time.

I'm not depressed or anything, and I'm still editing for 15-30 minutes a day, sometimes even one hour! Progress is progress! But it still feels like I slammed into a wall I now have to slowly climb with my bare hands and nails, when I was the Road Runner going Meep Meep! and grinning wildly for a while here. And the wall is wet and slimy and it smells weird too XD

Habit Tracking: Week 33 (August 10 - August 16)

This week, a "Celestial Beast" sticker (a knot of winged snakes) by Abi Stevens Art.

This was a good but busy week. I definitely felt like I fell behind on some things. Spending time with Taylor was good (and the snake-themed sticker wound up being appropriate.) Tuesday's hike was also wonderful, if tiring. Lots of family this week, between hanging out with Taylor and mom for a couple days, then breakfast with my dad mid-week. (Nice to see him again so soon.) Work felt like A Lot, being the final week of the summer season. I got a decent amount of reading in. And just under the wire for the week, a tiny bit of writing. There was a frustrating bout of exhaustion mid-week that left me doing little except sleeping, but I hope that's passed for now.

Goals for the week:

  • I did finish reading Uprooted
  • I worked on my writing intro
  • I got together with Taylor from Sunday night to Tuesday morning
  • We got some outdoor time with a hike
  • I went to breakfast with my dad
  • I did not update my reading page
  • I did not make my phone calls
  • I read Adrift in Currents Clean and Clear, which means I have finished all of the Wayward Children novellas that are currently out! (My first goal for this year was 25 books. My second goal when I decided to push beyond that was to keep the Wayward Children books as ever third or so entry on my TBR, but to make it through all of them before the end of the year. So hooray for hitting the second goal with much time to spare!)
  • I did catch up on Dreamwidth
  • I started reading Little Eve

Tracked habits:

  • Work - 5/7
  • Household Maintenance - 6/7
  • Physical Activity - 2/7
  • Wrote 500/1000+ Words - 1/7 - over 1000 words
  • Wrote on 2nd+ Draft - 0/7
  • Meta Work - 5/7
  • Personal Writing - 3/7
  • Other Creative Things - 1/7
  • Reading - 7/7 - I finished reading Uprooted, read Adrift in Currents Clean and Clear, and started Little Eve. I read along with Dracula Daily/Re: Dracula, plus a bit of my ebook side read. Taylor and I read a good chunk of Witch King. Alex and I read some of Duma Key.
  • Attention to Media - 7/7 - Sunday and Monday I listened to a Re: Dracula episode, plus listened to music; Tuesday had something in the background; Wednesday watched Blackwater Lane in the background, which we'd seen before and was meh; Thursday watched a paranormal stream; Friday we watched an episode of Alone, and then the first two episodes of Alien: Earth (which I wish I had been a bit more focused on), and then I caught up on Re: Dracula episodes; Saturday was something in the background again.
  • Video Games - 3/7 - I played more Final Fantasy XIV with Taylor; on Sunday we did the Tower of Zot dungeon, and got up through visiting Garlemald; Monday we finished the time in Garlemald, dealt with Zenos' current... all that, and then fought Zodiark for our big "nice job breaking it, hero" moment; Tuesday we played through the whole "bunnies on the moon" bits, finishing up part one of Endwalker.
  • Social Interaction - 7/7

Total words written: 1347 on my writing intro and some WIP summaries

the right light and the right clouds

I've been working on a project. I've been taking photos of the lake. Every one is taken from the exact same spot, with the exact same lens and settings. I capture the changing water and sky. I'm enjoying the differences in different weather. I started in the end of December. I'm always keeping an eye on the sky over the lake, watching for interesting clouds.

I'd been needing to mow the lawn all week, and tonight was finally the night. Partway through it, I noticed rose pink clouds lit up by the setting sun. Usually, when I see good clouds in the sunset, the light is gone by the time I get there. But this time I felt like I still had time, so I grabbed my camera and jumped in the car. I was worried, because while the sun wasn't going down below the horizon yet, it was going down behind some clouds. I drove as fast as I could, and ran up the trail to the bluff, and the clouds and light were still there!

The clouds had diminished, but the light was still good. By the time I got back on the road, the light was gone, so I barely made it in time.

lakemich-2025-08-20_18-34.jpg

So I'll have to finish the lawn tomorrow night.
