1. I am drunk right now because I was gonna go out to a lesbian bar this evening, but then some at home schedule stuff got in the way lol. So I am coping by drinking at home. If this is incoherent, that's why.

2. Soooo there's whispers over on Bsky (etc.) that Neocities might follow suit on the NSFW bans. This was disclosed via an email from Kyle Drake, and Neocities in general is kind of... unmoderated unless it's something REALLY bad or something that exploits the site's spaghetti code. NSFW will only get banned from Neocities IF the US laws allow it, but.... I was thinking that maybe, the silver lining of the social media bullshit is that people will go make their own sites again with no rules besides "don't post CP or anything else illegal". But if this happens, I will go postal. I will cry. I've been willing to grit my teeth and agree to disagree with Kyle Drake's AI shilling but he cannot sell out so easily when the baseline rules of "anything legal in the US" works and NSFW websites are shadowbanned / not searchable. I'm already worried Bsky is going that way when I really like it, but if the worst happens I really might bite the bullet and look into buying a domain and a paid host. I'm just not ready :( (<- draft I wrote last night when I was sober lol)

I know there's Nekoweb, since the servers are in Germany and they (probably) won't be affected by US laws. But it's run by zoomers and customer support is done over Discord, that's insane. I don't even mind Discord but emails are right there. I know where I'd buy a domain, and what paid host I would use (NFS), but ugh. I've been taking a prolonged hiatus from my site because I don't enjoy it anymore, and the community is just refurbished Tumblr/Discord. I should probably look into push updates and a SSG. If I move to a better paid host, I'm sure that .php or .cgi has better ways of hosting an art gallery than the hard-to-organize OC bullshit I have and Javascript. But I'm just not ready for all of it, but the way things are is too much for me. Again, I'm drunk so if this is "unfiltered but incoherent" I'm sorry. I'm a wagie, not a techie. I'm trying to touch grass and try to be in sane online communities. But man. It's hard.

2025 is 2005 if I was an adult during it. What the fuck.

Contractor skilled at rodent exclusion?

Can anyone recommend a contractor in the greater Camberville area who's good at rodent exclusion? As in, identifying where and how they're getting in, then systematically blocking those entrances so the rodents *stop* getting in.

This is for a 10-residential-unit building, brick and cement block outside, drywall inside. So someone who can handle a project larger than a single-family home. (It's a condo complex; the condo committee does not have any existing connections for that kind of work.)

Friday Word: Mandazi

Mandazi - noun.

Today's dessert takes us to the Swahili Coast! Mandazi, or bofrot or puff-puff, is a triangular frybread found in Kenya and surrounding areas. Peanuts, almonds, or coconut milk can be added to change up the flavours. Mandazi are not glazed or frosted, and can also be a convenient snack!

Full day faculty meeting

Let's see I did get down there by 730 in the morning (wah) and the upshot is we now have over 800 student athletes (in a school of barely 2K) and our dorms are full. That's a big yay. It's also a hardship because these students will miss so much school.

I got a raise (not one that'll cover inflation but it's better than nothing). I spoke to the dean and said if they give the tests face to face yes they could teach the micro class online. She was elated then promptly told me I'd be teaching them (I will have about 20 hours of overload by the end) And we're all so overloaded with this influx of students we'll be getting paid over.

I also spoke to the dean of the other department and because the Ag major isn't getting off the ground like they thought it would they're giving me the Ag micro's autoclave. Woot.

The president spoke of fixing our labs but they didn't get the money (but were told to try again next year) I thanked him for trying and seemed to be roped into figuring out what needs to be replaced/remodeled.

I was also asked to help the new hire at a branch campus with the A&P class...she's never taught it or even HAD the class. How is she going to do the lab? I dunno but I'll be hand holding this semester.

We were told thanks to MAGA we now have three new questions on the student eval so if the students accuse of being woke we could lose a job or even trigger a federal witch hunt. I did point out I HAVE to teach about vaccines and they said that wouldn't count toward this. If I end up in prison you'll know how.

It was a long ass day and I didn't sleep well because the tumors in my neck were pressing on my air way. One of my coworker's S.O. had her thyroid masses removed this week. They kept her overnight. Interesting. I did warn my two potential transporters that this might happen with me and I would pay for a hotel.

My friend TH bought me a steampunk wall clock (from Walmart of all places) because I've been having so many hard years in a row. That was sweet.

Weird dream channel

I had a very strange dream last night. It wasn't the content that made it strange — it was a fairly standard thriller/rom-com, featuring Japanese gangsters and a trip to Hawaii. What made it strange (for my dreams at any rate) was that I wasn't in the dream at all. The entire dream was in third person, like I was watching a movie. In fact, this dream started Ralph Macchio and Marisa Tomei!

Heat

The Truth About Caffeine, Dehydration, and Extreme Heat

As dangerous heat waves sweep the U.S., the CDC cautions against consuming caffeine. But not every expert is convinced the advice needs to be one-size-fits-all.
[---8<---]
"Don’t drink liquids that contain caffeine, alcohol, or large amounts of sugar — these actually cause you to lose more body fluid. Also, avoid very cold drinks because they can cause stomach cramps," the CDC wrote in its Extreme Heat guidance. It doubles down on this warning on its Heat and Your Health page, though with softer language, stating, "Consider limiting beverages high in sugars and sodium, caffeine, and alcohol, if possible."

Sweet science.

I used the last of the season's rhubarb to make my sister in law G. a tart birthday cake. I didn't try any, because she didn't want to slice it, but based on the batter and the sound of the crust when I tapped it, it came out the way I'd hoped. Not too sweet, with a bit of pucker you don't often find in cakes. If I make it again, I'll keep it at just one cup of sugar and use more rhubarb. Also, seeing about a lemon juice glaze to give it one last punch-up.

My dad's book group isn't meeting this coming Wednesday. However, I've still been tasked to bake for my parents' roof party in a few weeks, and I've decided on mocha and parsley for an extreme contrast. While I said I'd be happy to do this, I was told by one of my parents' friends that I was more or less tasked to make three cakes: two for the party, one for him. I'm thinking something with plums. Or possibly carrots. I'll see where the market takes me.

Early Humans

Ancient fossil discovery in Ethiopia rewrites human origins

The fossils found in northeastern Ethiopia date between 2.6 to 2.8 million years ago and shed new light on human evolution.
In the deserts of Ethiopia, scientists uncovered fossils showing that early members of our genus Homo lived side by side with a newly identified species of Australopithecus nearly three million years ago. These finds challenge the old idea of a straight evolutionary ladder, revealing instead a tangled web of ancient relatives
.

I'm surprised to find such far-flung relatives coexisting like that, but it's a happier image than today's lonely Homo.

Books

23 Must-Read Books About Hope That Inspire Change & Action

John Parsi, executive director of the Hope Center, says that while optimistic people see the glass as half full, hopeful people ask how they can fill the glass full.

“Hope requires a person to take responsibility for their wants and desires and take action in working towards them,” Parsi says.

So whether you’re looking to start, sustain, or complete something, we hope the books included in this list inspire you to take action and work towards whatever goals you have in front of you
.

I am particularly charmed to see “The Impossible Will Take a Little While: A Citizen’s Guide to Hope in a Time of Fear” edited by Paul Rogat Loeb because I've got a poem in that one, "Origami Emotion," from a couple decades ago.
