Squidge.org & Image Hosting Recent Downtimes

This morning the system seemed to have barfed and took image hosting down along with everything else it was serving to the web.  I've got things back up at the moment, but haven't finished checking all hosted sites to make sure everything is good.  It'll be back to normal asap.

(no subject)

Because of the exciting and inconclusive trip to the ER a few weeks ago, I have been told to schedule All The Tests:

- Monday was multiple ultrasounds, including the always-uncomfortable pelvic ultrasound.

- Today was full fasting labs, which means I got out of bed, got dressed, and went to the lab so they could draw EIGHT VIALS of blood. I am somewhat dizzy.

- I'm playing phone tag with the gastroenterologists' office to schedule both an endoscopy AND a colonoscopy, oh joy.

- Once that's done, I am pretty sure there'll be another appointment with my GP.

- Aaaaand my mammogram in Sept.

I'm not thrilled about any of this, but It Must Be Done.

Silksong!

Silksong is real! It's real and it'll be here in two weeks!! aösldks I'm so excited. I will not take Friday off because I'm too low on vacation days but I will clear my weekend (which means I have to do more chores & studying the weekend before which means I will not try out the Extreme Timed Challenge Exchange this year, ah well.)
(Ngl I was almost hoping it would come out after my exam, so in Mid-October, but I'll just have to focus so I'll study enough, because if I pass the exam I'll have more time to play after. I can do it.)

FIC (link):Newsflesh ([incomplete] canon-divergence AU) - "(I cannot) touch her, make her conscious"

(I cannot) touch her, make her conscious [Or, the eternal WIP where things go very, very differently near the ending of Feed] (15393 words) by umadoshi
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Newsflesh Series - Mira Grant
Rating: Mature
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Georgia Mason/Shaun Mason
Characters: Georgia Mason, Shaun Mason, Mahir Gowda
Additional Tags: POV First Person, Adopted Sibling Incest, Canon Divergence, Abandoned Work - Unfinished and Discontinued, incomplete but not a WIP, as finished as it's getting
Summary:

In which Shaun learns something significant late in Feed that he canonically doesn't find out until Deadline, and everything goes very (very, very) differently.

I started writing this canon-divergence AU a looong time ago, and I've likewise known for a long time now that I was never going to finish it--partly because Newsflesh hasn't been my primary fandom for several years, and partly because of how much plotting it was going to take to do it to my satisfaction. This parts ways with the series canon toward the end of Feed, and thus everything that happens to the main characters in Deadline and Blackout would never have happened, but all the political machinations and truths about the virus were still things that would have to be played out and...yeah.

But the emotional arc of this story, most of which I did get written down, is some of my favorite writing I ever did in this fandom; I kinda think that if I'd ever managed to assemble an intact story, it would be among the things I'd be proudest of.

I've decided to post it anyway, because what else would there be to do with it? So this is the heart of it--a bit fractured and strung like beads along a thread of story, but all there. Please ignore any minor wobbliness in the timeline/internal continuity, 'kay? And towards the end, I've left in a few plottier bits to give some idea of where this would have gone as an intact story.

This should make sense if you've only read Feed, but it does include one of the series' largest spoilers and hint at another one (both revealed in Deadline in canon).

And the standard notes: this is unbetaed, and the title comes from Linda Gregg's poem "There She Is".

Not quite the same thing? but in the general ball-park I think

A few days ago Ask A Manager posted stories of co-workers overstepping their expertise.

And I guess this is not quite the same thing but I had a massive flashback to That Morning of Hours I Will Never Get Back when the whole library staff had a session with an outside consultant.

I am honestly not sure what the rationale was for having us give up an entire morning of our precious closed period - during which we did all - well, seldom actually all, but as many as we could manage - of those essential backroom housekeeping tasks which cannot be undertaken when the place has actual readers coming in and USING THE COLLECTIONS dammit.

Possibly we had either just undergone, or were just about to undergo, one of the restructurings of which I saw many during my years there, distinct from the physical relocation upheavals.

But anyway, consultant.

Had consultant been briefed? Had consultant done any due diligence about what sort of institution this was?

Okay, did know it was a LIBRARY.

Had not the slightest apprehension that this was a world-renowned RESEARCH collection and that, you know, we were not lending out books and stamping them with return dates (I am not sure that this practice, by the date in question, even pertained in public libraries).

We were sitting there cringeing and wincing, wondering when it would all be over.

Were we not very restrained by not going, in huge chorus, in the manner he would doubtless have anticipated we learnt as part of our professional training, SSSSSHHHHHHHHHUUUUUUSSSSHHHHHH!!!!?

Birdfeeding

Today is cloudy and mild.  :D

I fed the birds.  I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 8/22/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 8/22/25 -- I did more work around the patio.

Floor more or less done!

There're a few details that need doing (buffing out some paint marks, moving the furniture back in, that kind of thing), but the floor is pmuch done! Finally! \o/ This pleases kitty. Both kitties, actually. And also me. Three kitties. Yessss.

Also holy shit did you know my bed-couch is SUPER COMFORTABLE? Because it is. Technically the one in the spare room is actually a bed - it's the fold-away kind, and mine's just a standard two seater but!!!! It is SO MUCH MORE COMFORTABLE OMG I'm love it.

I have however hit a snag on sitting at my desk - APPARENTLY, sometime while I've been stuck in the spare room, my legs decided they didn't need to worry about my usual sitting positions, and now that I'm back where I normally sit they're aching. :/ :/ :/ To be fair I do sit in a lot of weird positions, and they're specifically complaining about being braced against the edge of the desk, which has a bunch of my weight behind it at least half the time... BUT STILL. C'MON LEGS. You didn't USED to complain about this, and it hasn't been THAT long!!!

Anyway back to my super! comfortable! and snuggly! couch yesssss, is nap tiem nao.

The Friday Five for 22 August 2025

This week's questions were suggested by [livejournal.com profile] canuckfetish

1. Have you ever stayed in a hostel? If so, where? Did you like it? If you haven't stayed in a hostel, would you?

2. What is your favo(u)rite airport that you've been to? Why?

3. What is the best museum you have visited on vacation?

4. Have you ever made friends while traveling whom you keep in touch with on a regular basis?

5. Have you ever had a conversation with a seatmate on a plane?

Copy and paste to your own journal, then reply to this post with a link to your answers. If your journal is private or friends-only, you can post your full answers in the comments below.

If you'd like to suggest questions for a future Friday Five, then do so on DreamWidth or LiveJournal. Old sets that were used have been deleted, so we encourage you to suggest some more!

You know you need a vacation when...

We're going to be on vacation from the 16th to the 25 of September.

The other day I blocked this time out in my calendar. The most accessible way to do this involves inputting the start and end dates.

Today I was asked about a meeting for a random Tuesday in October and when I went to see whether or not I was free, I saw that whole day I was showing as "on leave." And the Monday before it. I'm not aware of any reason I'd have time off then!

Zooming out and every day was showing as on leave. Every day that month.

I investigated and, instead of making the vacation last until the 26th of September, I'd somehow gotten it to be the 26th of December.

My burned-out brain just wants an extra three months off, heh.

14. Recommend your favorite fic.

Aha. Ahahaha. Ahahahahaha. You expect me to narrow this down? Here are all my bookmarks on Pinboard and here are all my bookmarks on AO3. Have fun. (Everything is the same in those two places, except that Pinboard also has all the fic that isn’t on AO3 and AO3 only has the stuff that is on AO3.)

Any fic of your choice )

Wednesday What I'm...

On Thursday once again, oops.

Reading
  • I DNF'd In an Absent Dream by Seanan McGuire. I was just so bored with it and it seemed like any interesting parts were just vague mentions. Thankfully this one isn't really necessary for reading any of the rest of the series as far as I can tell, so I'll just move on to the next one.
  • I finished The Silver Branch by Rosemary Sutcliff. Not a bad book, but really didn't catch my interest as much as I'd hoped. Especially in comparison to the first book in the series, The Eagle of the Ninth, though much of that may be fondness for the movie. Anyway, don't think I'll be continuing with this series.
  • I finished Clown in a Cornfield 2: Frendo Lives by Adam Cesare. Not as good as the first, but still very enjoyable! Looking forward to the next (and final!) book.
  • I read Newt's Emerald by Garth Nix. Cute and fun! A good chill read while traveling.
  • Ficwise, unsurprisingly, I'm still on VegasPete. Currently reading say yes to heaven, say yes to me by [archiveofourown.org profile] biuskarma  and [archiveofourown.org profile] raykive , which is a very sweet and very, very smutty series.
Watching
  • The roommate and I are still on The Heart Killers after having to take a pause while I was out of work. We're over halfway and things are getting very exciting. Still not crazy about Kant, but how much I love Fadel/Style more than makes up for it lol
  • Continued rewatching KinnPorsche with the best friend. We hung out in person on Monday and spent quite a bit of the day watching (while voice chatting the roommate of course).
  • Watched a lot of youtube over the weekend. Specifically various tiktok compilations of my favorite Thai actors/pairings being cute, since I wasn't home to be watching any shows. Extra glad I'm not on tiktok bc all the sound bites are annoying as fuck, but they do have a lot of good stuff about the boys! It kept me sane over the weekend at least lol
  • No AEW this past week because I was out of town Saturday and Wednesday the roommate and I decided to continue with The Heart Killers instead of pausing for wrestling lol Lots to catch up on now, especially before the PPV on Sunday.
Listening
  • I guess I'm getting into t-pop now?? Been rewatching/relistening to JASP.ER's songs, as well as music videos from a couple other Thai actors I like. Surprising, but it's been a good time!
  • Also loving the song Charm from the band LYKN, which my faves Pond and Joong featured on.
Writing
  • Wrote some song lyrics. Someday I'll learn to actually write songs/music...
