Game Check-in: Duet Night Abyss

My UID: 3000131122928

[Official Site]

[Redeem Codes]

You can choose to play as a girl or a boy. I picked boy. You start in Purgatorio Island where Filthoids have recently attacked the village. Everyone has escaped on boats except MC, who's official name is Vita, and their childhood friend Berenica because the latter went back to find Vita. Now they have to figure out how to leave the island without a boat. In the past, people fled to the island and have kept hidden from the outside world.

The basic graphics are similar to Wuthering Waves. The controls are more like WuWa as well thought not as precise/controlled. I do like how you can jump again while in the air if you realize you're not gonna hit your mark and you can also shoot through the air. So far no flying or swimming. You can duck and slide. There's no fall damage! Combat is extremely easy so far. There are chests throughout so it encourages exploring. There was one 'hidden' chest you had to duck in to get. You have to pick up the items yourself (except in commissions), there's a 'collect all' option but it's only for nearby items and items tend to be spread out, so it can be easy to miss things if you don't walk around (it's hard to see things on sight). Breaking boxes gets you potions and ammo mostly. There's various other items to pick up in the world like stuff to sell or make things with. I got to level 5 just exploring and taking down all the enemies scattered around town. You can pick up a gun when you're heading to the docks and choose between a rapid fire or slower fire rate gun.

There's a Goddess based religion. Why are there so many bird carvings, holy moly. Maybe real birds don't come there so they made some? But you can pick up bird eggs...

You mean to tell me Vita didn't explore every inch of the island with Berry growing up and never saw the Goddess statue before?

According to Berry, they used to live in what's now ruins beyond the Goddess statue, but Vita doesn't remember that. There's a story there you can find that I think is about Vita, Berry and another kid Vita was trying to afford a cake for?

So these people have been looking for Berry, who they call 'No. 0', for a long time, and Vita is her Resonator. Vita letting go of her hand in that crucial moment made things worse - if only she'd fallen with him or she tricked the bad guys ('I'll jump too if you don't pull him up'). Now presumably she got taken by them anyway and thinks Vita is dead.

Sawashiro Miyuki is the seiyuu for Camilla! Another blonde char!

Interesting there's an 'Impressions' system where your choices effect how people around you react to you. The first choice you have comes down to 'be friendly with Camilla and Snow' or 'shun them' so it's pretty clear-cut... It seems when talking to people there's an Impressions check which you can fail, though you can roll again with special dice.

They called Vita a 'Charon' right? They have horns and distinctive spines.

I like how you can stop and read info entries mid-convo.

Cool, there are costume pieces like animals ears or tail! Ohh, that's what the summoning system is for. You get characters by buying their secret letters and running commissions for a chance to get their...shards? It takes 30 to summon a character. This goes for some weapons and demon wedges too.

I'm so glad dodging isn't a necessity so far, you can do it but it's not made a big deal of.

So the sword which is really a key that Vita has now was left behind by 'someone who knew them well'.

Can we not choose to run around as Vita? 😢 Oh, you have to go in and 'Deploy' him.

I just realized Snow's name is a pun with Tsuno (horn). And what's this about voices guiding her to Vita?

Killer whales perfect a ruthless trick to hunt great white sharks

Orcas in Mexico are flipping young great whites for their livers — a chilling display of intelligence and adaptation.

In the Gulf of California, a pod of orcas known as Moctezuma’s pod has developed a chillingly precise technique for hunting young great white sharks — flipping them upside down to paralyze and extract their nutrient-rich livers. The behavior, filmed and documented by marine biologists, reveals a level of intelligence and social learning that suggests cultural transmission of hunting tactics among orcas.

Goodest doggo finds a kitten in need, her hearty hooman takes the little fluffball in for fostering:

Posted by Ayala Sorotsky

Sometimes, rescue stories don't start with humans at all - they start with a dog who understands that tiny, meowing lives need saving. There's something endlessly wholesome about the way dogs seem to know when a kitten is too little, too young, or too cold to face the world alone. And when a dog gently leads their human to a helpless stray kitten, it's like the universe tapping on the door and asking "Hey… can you take care of this one?"

Fostering is one of the most loving acts in the rescue world. It's a promise: "You can stay here, little one, until you're strong enough to find a furrever home". It takes time, money, sleepless nights, and a heart big enough to say yes even when the house is already full. And sometimes that house is very full - filled with kids, other cats, other pets, and a strong awareness that love alone can't stretch square footage. But that doesn't make it any less beautiful. In fact, it makes it more so.

Even when a family knows they can't adopt another cat, they can still change a life. A rescue, a warm bed, a vet check, a safe transition into the world of indoor living - that's everything to a kitten who had none of it before. And for every foster who finds a forever home, there's a family out there that gets to experience the joy of adopting a cat who learned love from the very beginning.

So here's hoping this fluffy little precious purring floof gets the cozy home they deserve - thanks to a heroic dog, a determined human, and a heart big enough to help even when "no more" should have been the answer.

AKICIDW: Regional grocery shopping

I've been intrigued by the idea of Cincinnati chili since I first learned about it, but I never wanted to go through the trouble of cooking it from scratch so that I could experience it. The other night, when it made a repeat appearance in one of my fics, it occurred to me that they probably make canned Cincinnati chili. A quick web search revealed that not only do they, but that Skyline Chili, which is the particular Cincinnati chili restaurant that I've heard the most about, makes canned Cincinnati chili. I was prepared to order a can, only to discover that I could only order it in multipacks (4, 6, 8, or 12), which was not something I was willing to commit to with a food that I didn't know if I liked it.

Which is where you come in: If any of you live near enough to Cincinnati that you can buy canned Skyline chili at your local grocery store and you would be willing to buy a can and mail it to me, please send me a private message so I can send you my address and also arrange some way for me to pay you back, either by sending you money or by me sending you something they have in Minnesota that isn't available where you live or by some other option that would be acceptable to both of us.

*fingers crossed*

Birdfeeding

Today is cloudy and cold.

I fed the birds. I've seen a few sparrows and house finches.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 11/11/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 11/11/25 -- I did more work around the patio.

I've seen a young fox squirrel at the hopper feeder

EDIT 11/11/25 -- I did more work around the patio.

As it is getting dark, I am done for the night.

Weird dream channel - K-pop, dentisty, and strange conventions

Last night I dreamed that I was hanging out with Blackpink Jennie — I'm not sure if we were dating or just friends, but we knew each other very well and either option could have been a possibility. Anyway, we were at a convention that was like a combination craft fair/science fair for geology and/or conspiracy theories.[^1] While we were there, we ran into our dentist[^2] and our dentist's new business partner. Jennie and I both agreed that the new business partner was kind of strange — he was obsessed with the idea of some sort of link between diagonally opposing teeth[^4] — but we couldn't say anything about it because we didn't want to offend our dentist. Jennie and I were still trying to come up with a socially acceptable way to ditch our dentist and his partner when I woke up.

[^1] To give a better idea of what it was like, it was kind of like a dealers' room at a con: A huge room filled with tables, each table with a person behind it. Some of the people wanted to sell you something, some just wanted to tell you about their findings/theories. Some seemed to be related to geology, some to conspiracy theories, and some to both.

[^2] Not my IRL dentist, and probably not Jennie's IRL dentist either.[^3]

[^3] I don't know who Jennie's dentist is, but I'd be very, very surprised if her dentist isn't Korean, and this dentist was an elderly white man.

[^4] For example, that a problem with the left upper first molar would also cause problems in the right lower first molar.

Check-In Post - Nov 11th 2025

Hello to all members, passers-by, curious onlookers, and shy lurkers, and welcome to our regular daily check-in post. Just leave a comment below to let us know how your current projects are progressing, or even if they're not.

Checking in is NOT compulsory, check in as often or as seldom as you want, this community isn't about pressure it's about encouragement, motivation, and support. Crafting is meant to be fun, and what's more fun than sharing achievements and seeing the wonderful things everyone else is creating?

There may also occasionally be questions, but again you don't have to answer them, they're just a way of getting to know each other a bit better.

This Week's Question (courtesy of [personal profile] cora): What was your last project that got put into "time out" and why?

If anyone has any questions of their own about the community, or suggestions for tags, questions to be asked on the check-in posts, or if anyone is interested in playing check-in host for a week here on the community, which would entail putting up the daily check-in posts and responding to comments, go to the Questions & Suggestions post and leave a comment.

I now declare this Check-In OPEN!

"This fight is levelling you up before our eyes"

For anyone who's Dark Souls-curious and has a spare 30 mins, this is the best illustration I've seen of the process of figuring out a boss fight, and how you can go from dying in the first couple of seconds of a fight to methodical execution of it (and why it's so incredibly satisfying when you do):

For context, this is the Stray Demon, an optional side boss who's a very beefed-up version (now with added magic, as well as vastly increased damage and HP!) of the Asylum Demon from the tutorial.

I have a theory that the Asylum Demon is so pear-shaped partly in order to encourage the novice player to think of getting behind him and stabbing him in the arse, thus learning a key component of DS1 strategy (positioning yourself where it's hardest for them to hit you, which frequently means getting behind them or in their crotch).

Corroborative V&V for Autonomous Systems

I have a publication in the Agents and Robots for Reliable Engineered Autonomy (AREA) workshop. Corroborative V&V for Autonomous Systems: Integrating Evidence and Discrepancy Analysis for Safety Assurance. It should be open access, but does not appear to be. It's not a super-exciting paper. It takes the observation that, if you are doing assurance of robotic systems you will take a variety of approaches; abstract models, simulated tests, hardware tests... and then have to reconcile the results of these approaches. The paper describes the first stab at a tool for this, but it is a very early prototype.

Today’s Featured Article is Ninety One Whiskey by komodobits. This Supernatural AU story is more than 400 thousand words long and took two years to finish.

It focuses on the pairing of Dean Winchester/Castiel, aka Destiel, and is praised for its good characterization and the slow building relationship. The fanfiction starts in the spring of 1944 and is known for its realistic portrayal of war and action sequences.

For the majority of the time it was a work in progress the story was tagged as “major character death”, but the author removed the tag before the posting the final chapters.

The fic is considered by some to be one of the best historical AUs in the fandom and has spawned its own small fandom with fans creating a variety of art, graphics and vids inspired by the fic.

Head on over to our Fanlore page to check out its reviews and see some of the amazing art created for this work!

Posted by Blake Seidel

Pets are a responsibility for life - that's what the woman in this post has hopefully learned by now. She has a 3 and 5-year-old cat, whom she is considering rehoming to move in with her boyfriend, with "severe cat allergies". He gets hives, which can't be fun to deal with at all. The problem is that he won't compromise at all - he won't take an allergy pill, won't accept them being furbidden from certain spaces, not even if they eat hypoallergenic food and vacuum every day. She was actually thinking about it, until the internet got its claws out and reminded her of the most important rule of pawrenthood: you don't give your pets up for anything.

Cats will be with you through the good times and bad. They'll be with you through many relationships, breakups, heartaches, joyful meowments, and everything in between. We can't say the same about a boyfriend. Your cats are your responsibility and no one else's - they quite literally rely on you to take care of them. And no, it doesn't matter where you give them up to - be it a family member or a shelter, those cats will always wonder why you stopped being their hooman.

We hope she finds a solution to her dilemma; anything that doesn't involve treating her cats like they are any less than family will do.

2025 Work Calendar, Part 1

Here are the first several pages from my work calendar.

1. The annual pages. I think that maybe I should've used a different tape for the borders, but, eh, it's done now.

2. January:

3. February:

I like this layout, but it's fussy to draw (and I don't freehand, because even with dots, I can't draw a straight line to save my life, so I need to use a ruler), so this is the only month I used it for. As it is, I messed it up the first week, though it didn't turn out awful in the end.

4. A comparison of the change in notebook size from last year. (It's actually my home calendar, but it's the same size I used for work.)
