It doesn't make a man weak.

He knows that now, because no one could stop him on his way to the hold. Not ghost or god, not even Blackbeard. Down the hatchway holding a mug of tea, into the damp and dark, tapping the tune of "Brave Benbow" on a bulkhead until it swings open.

"Fang, you beauty," Lucius whispers, shuffling back into the secret little lamplit room to make space for him.

He's looking pale, poor thing, but not too thin just yet. Never, if Fang can help it. There's sugar in the tea, and Fang's handkerchief is stuffed with all the salt beef and ship's biscuit he could bundle away at dinner.

It's his cheek that Lucius's lips find before food or drink, for all that he must be hungry and thirsty.

"Go on," Fang says, blushing straight to his heart. "Eat up."

He can't stay too long, but there's time enough to stroke Lucius's hair and bask in his brave smiles and pretty talk as he eats. To let him curl up in his lap for a cuddle. To take good care of him.

"I'll be back tomorrow," he promises.

Come hell or high water he will.
