30 Days of Fandom - Day 22 & 23

Day 22 - Have you ever participated in a fest or a Big Bang? If so, write about your favorite experience in relation to one. If not, are there any you've thought about doing? And if not, why not?

I've been participating in fests pretty much as long as they've been around. Most of my early Harry Potter fic was written for the Snape Fuh-Q Fest and the ADxSS Buggering Bee, and I've been taking part regularly ever since. I know a lot of people bemoan the ubiquity of fests and challenges and exchanges these days, but they've almost always been a part of my fannish life. I love the social aspect of them, the way they expose me to writers and artists I might not otherwise meet, and the way they push me to try new things.

One of my favourite experiences was writing The Turning of the Tide for [livejournal.com profile] jeddy83 for the 2005 round of [livejournal.com profile] merry_smutmas. Jeddy is someone I massively admire (and miss, now that we don't run into each other much anymore) who just happened to be my primary beta-reader at the time. I had to be stealthy! I told a few sneaky fibs, and then I hunkered down and tried my very hardest to write something that avoided all the standbys I found easy and attempted all the things I found difficult. Of course, I didn't fool Jeddy for a moment, but I still had a lot of fun writing the story.

Day 23 - When you post, where do you post to? Just your journal? Just an archive? Your own personal site?

I generally post in my journal and at AO3 (which I am really loving), as well as some fandom- and pairing-specific journal comms. I do have a personal web site, but I am wayyyy behind in updating it. I've been working for a while to put together a more bare bones design that would make future updating easier, but that's slated for some mythical time period known as "when I have nothing else to do."
