My HP Beholder Gift!

I really, really needed a happy surprise today, and it seems the gods of fandom decided to smile on me, because my gift for hp_beholder was posted.

An Affinity for Dangerous Creatures (Kettleburn/Millicent + Severus Snape, Mature, ~8800 words) is pretty damned brilliant.

If you're at all partial to, as I am, stories about difficult people finding each other and negotiating their way into each other's lives and managing to grasp some pleasure and happiness where other narratives would deny them, this is the story for you. It's a thoughtfully constructed story well-told, and I don't think you'll regret spending time with these characters. Very much recommended.

There are pairings I love that lean in the other direction, however, and as much as sweet pre-DH Snapledore will always have a place in my heart, some of my favourite authors are those who have taken these two in other directions.

A brilliant take on this crossover, and on the way a man like Lestrade would see a man like Sherlock. Clever, lean, and perfectly characterized.

"A contract," Sherlock says, as if that's the important thing here, as if that's the detail to be focusing on here.

The room looks like a scene straight out of a horror movie, one of those slasher things with more blood than plot. (Lestrade dragged Sherlock along to see one, once, because the only alternative was a romantic comedy, and Sherlock criticizing a slasher movie is infinitely preferable to Sherlock waxing prosaically about the human delusion of love.)

The not-a-count smiles his snake-like smile. His lips are too red - and that's a relief, Lestrade thinks, to be able to look at the man, thing, whatever and think 'suspicious smile, lips too red'. "Of course. All our clients are required to sign them."

The coal fire is a comforting throb behind his ribs, like the great furnaces that drove the ships he left behind. It’s familiar and strange all at once. Moments like this, drifting off to sleep at night, soothed by the glow he could feel even two decks away, are some of his favorite memories. The only ones, really, that he cares to recall from that time.

Remix Redux Rec

A-ha! Here I was sneakily keeping tabs on the Harry Potter stories being uploaded to Remix this year and puzzling over what my remixer could possibly have chosen, only to discover that it was one of my Avatar stories that was remixed!

A Journey of A Thousand Miles (Return of the Dragon Remix) (inspired by The Path Travelled) is a warm and satisfying piece of post-series could-be-canon in which the newly crowned Fire Lord Zuko travels to his uncle's tea shop in Ba Sing Se.

This is one of my favourite kinds of remixes, where an author takes something as small as a drabble and grows the story out organically from that one little seed. This story stands well on its own and is a must-read for any fans of Zuko and Iroh.

Rainy Day Recs: 1 x Lestrade/Mycroft

At over 178,000 words, the At Least There's the Football series is meaty enough to stand on its own as this week's rec and is the definition of comfort reading for me. It's fourteen installments of funny, grounded, character-driven romance that takes advantage of its placement in the Sherlock universe but also stands on its own legs as the story of two middle-aged men from very different backgrounds negotiating their way into a relationship in a refreshingly mature and good-natured way, surrounded by a supporting cast that isn't to be missed and some really scrumptious food.

I'm not usually a big fan of creative tagging on AO3, but I have extended my patience for this series and offer a sample that convey some of the things I love about these stories: Greg Lestrade is secretly punk rock, The Clash is a band you should know about, Anthea's totally a ninja, gratuitous Harry Potter references, your boyfriend's probably a Slytherin, you don't have to drink the tea but we will judge you for it, thank God somebody can cook, bowties are cool, I wasn't kidding about the ninja thing, impeccable use of prepositions, Lestrades don't dance except when they do, and Mycroft versus the pomegranate.
